Originality / ZE radiator tag for 69 Camaro L/78 W/THM400
« on: February 23, 2010, 02:22:08 AM »
Hi all !

I'm looking for an original ZE tag for my 69 Camaro.  This was for a 3-core radiator
with straight neck for automatic transmission applications on L/78 cars.

I have checked several well known reproduction houses but none make this tag :o

One such reprduction house has offered to make the tag, but they need an original
tag to use for comparison/analysis.  I'm in a quandry.

Does any member here have this tag that they either want to sell or loan for the
reproduction process?  The latter is a tough one - I know.

Got a question for those of you who know......

Can anyone give me the general breakdown on '69 Camaro steering linkage?  There were power steering and manual steering equipped cars.
I assume these both used the same steering linkage.  But what are the differences between standard & fast ratio steering and how did that
effect the pitman arm, idler arm, center link, etc..

Was the Z/28 steering linkage different than the big block cars?  What about the COPO cars?  What about standard Camaro's?  ???

Originality / Need clarification on original ZL/2 firewall relay
« on: March 30, 2009, 10:22:15 PM »
I have a fast question that I'm sure can be answered by those of you with ZL/2 equipped cars.

I was of the opinion that the original relay ( mounted on the firewall near the distributor ) is
different from the service relays in that the three prongs are arranged differently.  Is this true?

If so, what constitutes the original prong configuration vs. the service prong configuration?

Anyone have an image they can post for verification?

Thanks,

General Discussion / Yet again another big block motor mount question
« on: March 14, 2009, 07:53:50 PM »
Big block motor mounts seem to be getting all the attention these days, so I thought I would chime in with a question. ::)

I have a pair of motor mounts ( the later interlocking type ) that came out of a big block 1969 Caprice.  I removed these myself,
so I know they are correct for that application.  To the best of anyones knowledge, are these motor mounts the same as Camaro,
Nova, and Chevelle for the same year?

I have been reading a few posts regarding the different motor mounts vs. different year frame mounts and I'm just trying to get
some things straight in my own head about all of this.  Any input would be much appreciated.

Thanks guys,

Originality / Original long bolts for 1969 L/78 motor mounts
« on: February 14, 2009, 04:49:56 AM »
Big block Camaro's had a unique motor mount that used a threaded receiver on one side.  This meant that a nut was not required to secure the long bolt.

I have an original pair of these rare motor mounts and I will be hunting the correct original bolts that were used in conjunction with these mounts.  Can anyone
post information on these bolts?  I need to know correct head markings, overall length, bolt head style, etc........  An image or two would be fantastic.

Can anyone shed any light?

Originality / Urgent - need help identifying original flapper valve screws
« on: September 07, 2008, 07:39:23 PM »
Guys!

Can anyone post an image of an original screw ( how many were there anyway - 6 or 8 ? )
that was used to attach the flapper valve frame to the ZL/2 hood?  I am looking at a complete
assembly right now and the screws are the only items I've personally never seen........

Decoding/Numbers / Julian date code on THM400's in 1969 model year.
« on: June 10, 2008, 12:00:50 AM »
Hi Guys!

Can anyone give me a 101 level course on the use of assembly codes on THM400 transmissions during the 1969 model year?
Were these codes sequential, or Julian, or something else?

I have a CX coded THM400 with the following information:  69X - 395

Did each year start with number 1  and progress from there? What does the 395 designate?  Julian date, sequence number, etc.?
What does the 2160 designate?

Help would be appreciated.

Originality / Original "Endura" bumper brackets & mounting hardware
« on: February 20, 2008, 01:16:00 AM »
Hi all!

I'm working on a '69 Camaro project and I need the original mounting brackets & hardware for the "Endura" bumper.  I know repro's are available, but I only want original
components.  Here is an image I found of an orignal outer bracket ( assembled ) to the bumper.  I'd like to see these components separated so I can see exactly what
real ones look like.  The socket head cap screw used to attach the bracket to the bumper is also critical.

Can anyone post one or more images of the original outer bracket(s), bushings, bolts?  Also, I'd like to see what the original bolts looked like that attached
the inner brackets to the bumper as well.

Finding this stuff (correct) is like hens teeth.

Originality / Original 69 big block crank pulley bolts
« on: October 19, 2007, 10:19:58 PM »
Hi all!

I'm in the final phases of assembly on my '69 396 and I misplaced a number of the original bolts & fasteners.  In particular this time, I am looking for the
three ( 3 ) original bolts that mounted the lower pulley to the vibration dampner.  Can anyone describe these bolts to me, or better yet post an image?

Were they standard 3/8-16UNC hex head bolts with a split style lock washer?  Or, were they hex head bolts with an integral washer?  What is the length
of the correct bolt?

Lastly, anyone got a set of three originals that are looking for a new home?

Decoding/Numbers / Odd rear code on '69 Z/28
« on: August 13, 2007, 02:48:34 AM »
Guys!

I'm looking at a 04/69 built Z/28 that appears to be original ( except for the original blown engine ).
Odd thing is that the rear has an 05xx assembly date and is a BS code ( 3.31 posi ).  I'm at a
loss as to why the axle assembly is the month after the assembly of the car.  Could this possibly
be legit?  I've heard of cars being sidelined for "repairs", but the entire rear assembly.  Any thoughts
on the matter would be appreciated.  One possible clue is that the axle tubes were later welded to
the center casting in some sort of strengthening or repair operation.  3 owners back said it was like
that when they owned the car.  It also looks like driveshaft loops were on the car at some point as well.

BTW, the M-20 is the original per the matching partial VIN.  There is no POP or documentation available.

Lastly, how unusual was the 3.31 posi in the '69 Z/28?

Decoding/Numbers / VIN sequence is off by two weeks
« on: July 21, 2007, 11:27:41 PM »
I'm doing some VIN research to determine the build date of a car I'm considering.  I went to the archives ( here ) and got the "Ending VIN #" for the previous month,
then added the daily production rate ( per production day ) to work my way up to the VIN I'm researching.  Using the previously agreed to figure of 912 cars per day,
I come up with a build date that is two weeks later than the build date on the trim tag.  ???  Is this possible?

A couple issues need to be clarified:

1) If a build month ends on a Wednesday ( let's say April 30th, 1969 for this example ), that would be a 04E build date.  The following month starts on the next day,
Thursday in this example.  Would Thursday & Friday count as 05A?  What if there was only one day ( Friday ) left in the week that starts the new month?  Does
     Friday count as 05A?

2) How accurate are the "Ending VIN" numbers GM supplied ( listed here )?

I had done a similar VIN research on my current SS and it worked out to late 10D, or possibly very early 10E - so my 10D trim tage code is very close.  As I mentioned
earlier, the potential car is off by two weeks ( later than the code on the trim tag ).

Am I missing something here? ???  Or, is this within the acceptable tolerance for VIN research?

Originality / N/66 option phase-out for 1969 Camaro production
« on: July 21, 2007, 10:58:01 PM »
Can anyone tell me the approximate, or actual date the N/66 "Sport Wheel" option was cancelled?  According to Jerry MacNeish, it was only available from Sept '68 to
Jan '69.  I've seen a number of SS Camaros with post 1/69 builds and the owners claim the N/66 wheels were original to the build.  Jerry, if you're here - chime in please.

Even though the N/66 option was cancelled, could someone still get the N/66 wheels put on their car ( by the dealer ) prior to deliverey?  Are there any "documented"
cases of known N/66 equipped Camaros with post 1/69 builds?

Decoding/Numbers / Date of mfg. based on VIN
« on: January 25, 2007, 05:17:49 AM »
I have a question for those of you knowledgeable with 69 Camaro VIN's.  If a particular Camaro has a VIN, but no cowl tag, how can you tell the actual date
of manufacture?  I know Jerry MacNeish published the VIN's and the corresponding months in his 69 Fact Book, but I was wondering how closely you can
zero in on the build date ( or week ) based solely on the VIN.  I'm not sure why the cowl tag is missing on this particular Camaro.

Thanks,
Steve

Decoding/Numbers / How do I title a Camaro without one?
« on: January 24, 2007, 05:56:36 AM »
Hi all !

I'm looking at a local Camaro that needs lots of TLC.  I may want this for a project car.

The car comes with a bill of sale, but not a title.  What are my options for getting a clear,
legal title to the car so I can put it on the road at some point?  If it helps, I'm in NC.

Thanks,
Steve

Originality / '69 SHP throttle rod assembly
« on: January 02, 2007, 06:37:05 PM »
Does anyone know if the '69 SHP Camaro's all used the same two-piece throttle rod assembly?  I am interested in the difference ( if any )
between Z/28 & L/78 ( this would encompass L/72 ).  Recently, I got into a discussion with someone who claimed that they were indeed
different.  As only having focused on big block Camaros, I can't say I've looked for a difference.

I went too Rick's and they do show two different SHP assemblies.
