Restoration / Door Hinge Bushing Fit - 1969
« on: September 28, 2024, 01:57:01 PM »
Need some feedback on bushing fit on door hinges.  I bought a rebuilt 1969 GM driver side lower hinge(stamped 2703 L) with new bushings.  Trouble is that the bushings fit loose in the pin bore on each hinge half.  With the other hinges already on the car, the bushings are stationary and the door pivots on the pin which rotates in the bushings.  Shouldn't the bushings be a press fit, especially the top bushing with the serrations on it?  Can anyone verify if this loose fit is normal?  Thanks in advance for your input.

Restoration / Muncie Speedo Cable Clips
« on: September 16, 2023, 04:34:47 PM »
Who has the best repro Muncie speedo cable clips?
Ordered some from Classic and they're not even close.  Had to use a 3/8 steel pin to form the new one and get a comparable curvature to the original.  Heartbeat is on back order for theirs and the photo doesn't provide a good view to compare.  It's a stamped steel clip for cryin out loud.  How hard can it be to COPY an original?
I only have one original left from the firewall as they they "lost" the ones in the tunnel.  The gorillas at the body shop trashed the tabs when they removed it. Hardened steel only has a couple iterations of bending and it fractures.  So I can't even use my remaining clip where it originally was installed.
As always, any info is appreciated.

Restoration / Original Coupe Windshield Glass Dimensions
« on: August 23, 2023, 10:09:37 PM »
I have been looking online at all the new windshields that are offered.  What caught my attention were the dimensions listed for all of the replacements.  In particular the vertical dimension of the glass.  My original is 20 1/8 inches in height but the new ones are listed as 22 inches.  I ran the tape on my windshield opening and 22 inches of glass will put the bottom right at the point where my lower windshield trim clip screws are located.  That's a no go for lower trim installation.  Something is definitely not kosher here.  The original will drop right in.  Does anyone have any info on this difference?  I conducted a search on this subject but nothing turned up.  Scratching my head on this one.

Restoration / Windshield Lower Trim Clips & Outboard Screws
« on: July 21, 2023, 07:55:21 PM »
1. Re: the outboard clips -
Wish I had known about this being such a PITA before I got the front clip and hood on.  I've run the gamut searching threads on the net for how to install those stinking things with the fenders on.  All original clips and trim pieces so that part of the equation is not in question.  If I can get those end screws/clips installed then I'll attempt to drill the locating holes for the remaining clips in the center of the trim.

2. Re: Outboard Screws -
Can someone confirm the size/thread pitch etc. of the 2 screws that attach the outboard lower w/shield trim clips to the door jam at the cowl?    Mine have gone MIA and I don't want to auger out the hole with the wrong screw.  Are they the same as the attachment screws for the lower trim center clips?

Many veterans of full restorations on this forum so ANY of your insight is appreciated!

Restoration / Cowl Hood Accel Lever Finish
« on: July 19, 2023, 01:40:19 AM »
Looking for feedback on correct finish for the cowl hood accelerator lever and bolt.  After the grunge was removed it looked like it may have had some black paint on the lower part near the clamp bolt.

Originality / Mystery Z28(?) Oil Pan
« on: January 13, 2019, 12:17:54 AM »
I found an oil pan that I cannot positively identify.  It is identical to my '69 Z pan with the 2 spot welded corner tabs(no outside dimples) and middle baffle with 2 spot welds. Side rails for the windage tray are just like the '69 pan.  Ski jump is more pronounced than the '69 but has no middle bump at the front side of the sump kickup like the service pan.  Side die draw marks and dimples are like the '69 pan.  The front seal looks to be just shy of 2 1/2 inches which would be like the later service pans.  Will try to attach pics for reference.
Any help is appreciated.

General Discussion / 12 Bolt Axle Asm Weight
« on: August 21, 2018, 06:19:35 PM »
Does anyone have an accurate weight for a typical 12 bolt Camaro axle assembly?  I'm working with my brother to have his axle shipped and the freight company requires weight for their quote.  I'm guessing it might be around 200lbs.  I conducted a search and there was only one thread that stated the housing was around 90lbs.  The former owner has no means of weighing it.  Any help is appreciated.

Maintenance / Used Z28 346 Cam - OK with new lifters?
« on: October 12, 2015, 06:51:12 PM »
I found my used 346 cam in the top of the garage the other day and it looks new.  Problem is I can't find the lifters.  Is this cam just fit for the recycle bin or can it be run with new lifters?  I heard that lifters with the oil holes on the face will allow use of used cams.   Any thoughts on this?

Maintenance / 7029202 Q-jet Issues
« on: July 23, 2015, 01:05:28 PM »
Just got my q-jet returned after being restored.  Looks great.  Installed the carb and can't get a stable idle, it dies when I get the rpm down to about 700, when the throttle is stabbed the rpm's jump up and won't drop back down and the exhaust is so rich it burns your eyes.  Tried to adjust the idle screws to the same turns out that they were before and also the same as the backup q-jet and it still doesn't run worth a darn. The backup q-jet would start and idle perfectly so I know the rest of the fuel delivery system is good. Any ideas what could be the issue?  I checked the base gasket again to make sure my late night flog didn't result in it being installed backward but it is on correctly.  Sure wish they put Holley's on these things.  Any help is appreciated.

Maintenance / Convertible Top Cleaner
« on: May 07, 2015, 04:32:54 PM »
Does anyone with a white convertible top know of a cleaner that is effective?   I have a nice top on the car but due to sitting for years in my dad's garage with no cover on it, it looks like the dust dulled and slightly discolored it.  I really don't want to use something like white side wall cleaner on it due to the effect it could have on the material.  I searched the subject here and nothing came up so I started this thread. Thanks for the help.

Restoration / Flash Chrome - Recommendations for a reputable shop?
« on: December 05, 2014, 02:50:08 PM »
I want to get my original 69 big block valve covers re-plated in the original "flash chrome".  I searched the forum on the subject and didn't turn up anything definitive.   Anyone have recommendations for reputable shops with REASONABLE prices that can duplicate the finish?  I have no interest in triple chrome mirror like plating.  Trying to get the ball rolling on this so I can get all the original engine bay pieces back on the car for next spring.  Thanks in advance to everyone for your feedback.

Anyone out there have the torque specs for the bolts that hold the '69 2-piece disc brake rotor to the hub?

Maintenance / 12 Bolt Axle Fluid - Recommendations
« on: September 09, 2013, 02:24:12 PM »
Hey folks - I'm in the process of doing an R&R of the 12 bolt rear axle seals in my '69 pace car, and as such need to refill with lube.  I am thinking that a synthetic would be best but looking for experienced opinions regarding a particular brand, etc.   Any recommendations on best lube/fluid to use for this application?  I want to do it once and do it right.  Thanks in advance for your input.

Decoding/Numbers / Timing Cover date codes
« on: July 27, 2013, 05:44:32 PM »
Looked through all the threads on this subject and could not find a definitive set of guidelines for small block vs big block timing cover date code format.
So far the codes are supposedly week and year of production i.e.  21 69 is 21st week of 69, Julian calendar date vs year i.e. 21st DAY of 1969 or even MONTH of production vs year.  It also appears to vary from small block to big block . Can any of the guru's here summarize what the latest tribal knowledge is on these date codes?  THANKS...

Restoration / Firewall Blackout Paint
« on: July 26, 2009, 06:53:34 PM »
Looking for experienced opinions on firewall blackout paint.  Percent gloss, manufacturer, aerosol preferred.  Was going to use the OEM BlackIT Poly black in eggshell finish on my resto car.  Problem is when I inspected my other unrestored 69 the paint looked almost dead flat black.  Tested the mentioned eggshell OEM around the heater motor area on the outboard face of the cowl and there is more gloss than the original finish.   I assume there was some variance in the gloss from the factory but I want to get this right and not too glossy.  Any help would be appreciated. Thanks...
