General Discussion / Re: Vin/Trim number help 69 RS/SS 396

Outside of it maybe having a trim tag from a former life lol.... Seems to me like maybe the seller is sending out a feeler to see what holes "the community" will shoot through it, so he can fix it. Two obvious ones that aren't easy to fix, and im not telling or maybe we should just lay it all out there and cost him a few thousand to correct.... well, in short,  avoid....

Is it the picture or does it look like it was stamped from the front and lettering is indented?

General Discussion / Re: Chicken or the Egg?

I feel like when we are talking about our cars, we refer to them as "ss" or "Z".... we all have camaros, so the model of camaro we have becomes the noun as we use it to refer to the car, leaving the word Camaro out . Thus in proper English, the descriptor would typically come first:

Burnished brown Z
Dusk Blue SS
Garnet red L-78
Rs SS
Fathom green Rs Z/28

In spanish, well that would quite something else....
deporte estupendo en azul de atardecer
Which is Dusk Blue Super Sport
Forgive the translation if its wrong, but just to illustrate.
egg then chicken I think

I believe ss cars could have 4 leaf springs with no regularity, based on options.

Seriously..??.. ???

Um... yeah, read few posts from Kurt and others, but you can refer to the ask crg page , answer to question # 121 part 2.

You could get one with the lettering and sand it down till the letters are gone, then go with finer and finer grit , then polish with liquid abrasives. I would start with 400(I am impatient hehe) to 600 wet and go from there, and stop at 1500-2000, then go liquid. Going over the brushed piece, I would imagine if you have any small scratches they will not be seen once installed unless they are over the letters and the letters are dark

Kudos for going the extra mile and doing something custom!

Pretty sure the perches are "filled" with the springs so its the deeper multileaf perches, Ill get some more pictures this weekend, and measure the plug. The last digit of the casting date in person is definitely an 8 , so the year cast is 1968 , no? October 7th 1968 and tube date is october 12 th, which works.

What does the filler plug size tell us ?

Decoding/Numbers / 12 bolt Rear axle Decode 69 PJ code ?
« on: June 04, 2014, 01:31:23 AM »
Here is a picture of the rear axle stamp, tried to make the stamping as visible as possible with lighting. Looks like  PJ code + 1012 G with E underneath, which is 68 3.73 posi, BUT the casting date on the 3894860 center section is J 7 8 . This would be cast in October 68. Car is a 12A 69 Camaro, could this be correct?

Decoding/Numbers / Crayon behind rear seat X? Opinions please

So here is my crayon X2/3 ? almost nearly covered by the heathen who tried to mask the rust in that area with thick undercoating. Car has been living its life as a big block car, of which everything else checks out. 4 leaf spring, 12 bolt(more on this in the next episode). Hidden vins match. It has A/c , no muncie hole and looks like originally an auto(more in another episode), so it cant be a Z thus not a 3. Power windows, rear defrost, console, spoiler car(one smaller trunk lid torsion bar)

Could the guy on the line have made a mistake when getting used to the X codes? Looks like at the bottom, he tried to under score/straight line it and make the bottom of the 2 ?

The second picture is another I saw somewhere, which is a 2 that looks like it nearly became a 3. Maybe this can be filed under the liquid lunch possibility? Poor penmanship?

I guess I need someone who has seen a lot of these.... any opinions are appreciated, thanks

Went to a cruise this evening. Saw a 1969 X55 L78 car that I had not seen before. Build date was 12 B. VIN is N559370 and the build number is NOR 146170, the six might be a five. Old eyes aren't as good these days but looked like a 6

Did you mean L48?

Very interested in the topic.... Also as curious, when did they go from the color abbreviation to X ie  "DG7" to "X7" in crayon behind the rear seat ? Or was this just one employees way of writing it? Or was this a Norwood or LOS difference? for mine its X in crayon, but I have deluxe white hounds tooth, so I dont know how they would abbreviate that.

Roy,
Just got my refund for 9N707541. I've been glued to this thread since it started. I appreciate all the efforts by yourself
and others to accomplish this task. My question is, did I just get lucky to be one of the missing (random) or does it seem that other October 1969 build cars will also be missing? I guess my real question is whether mine might still have some hope to be found? Thanks again.

I can't answer your question about other cars missing in the same VIN area at this point. We miss about 7% of the cars we check, just the way it is. We have found batches that for some reason did not sort correctly, we have found pages that got missed in the digitization. The important thing to realize is we have kept a record of every car we missed and it is flagged as missed so if we do uncover a group of numbers we will recheck the missed cars against them and notify anyone that it affects.

I was one of the missing , got the denial. Roy Thank you for this! Following up should anything come up on our vins is great! Keep the $50! I will hold out hope that more will turn up as time goes on.

The missing are about 3500 microfiche cards if there are about 22 cars on each one. Some boxes in a corner or closet somewhere were missed? Keep hope alive!

Not really, the microfiche does not just contain Camaro each sheet contains other models also, what is missing appears to be the original clerical input for the Norwood plant on 69 production. It is not missing microfiche pages, the data just is not on the microfiche.

Thats right I forgot its all models, sorry..... Wow so it was never put on microfiche... GM doesnt want us knowing something lol or I guess the gal who was doing the archiving was on maternity leave during those months lol.
