Sorry to be late in responding.

Interesting relationship to what Dave Bean mentioned.  He was the T/G crew chief for the ’70 season. 

He said they did not touch the engines, but the Pontiac guys said he did and that was the cause of the bad results for the ’70 season.  Heard a few similar murmurs with the BFG sponsorship—disappointing results could be blamed on unproven tires.

To be balanced, the Pontiac guys did incredible as independents; the ’71 and ’72 results were fantastic, and they competed out of their pockets.  The ’72 season is impressive—the results are superman.

I’m sure there is a hornets’ nest here.  Not trying to open it.  Just noting that politics extended beyond Ford and probably touched every team.

I believe Bud Moore was the blue oval’s favorite, but Mercury/Cougar were not meant to be.

Steve Holmes - sorry for the delay.

My project was going to be a clone of the T/G car as it ran the last two races of the '70 season.  Like what John Cordts and David Hobbs drove.  Super accurate clone was the goal and I was heading there.

Then I stumbled on a 303.  Too far along to scrap all the T/G bodywork, but shifting to more of a Team Associates suspension setup.  Also the start of my stall.

I have been tremendously stalled.  I want to get back on the horse, but too damn tired every night to work on it.  Really embarrassed about the excuses…

I'm building a second gen Pontiac.  Can't wait to see detail shots and learn more about the neatest period in racing!

I am sure I will also learn more about Jerry Titus and his move to Godsal/Pontiac that Jon shared.  Neat stuff.

I suspect my 303 will be the same; too high of a RPM band without enough mid-range torque.  Pontiac valve train should do better than shafts.  The 303 picked up 100+ hp in 366 NASCAR dress; I bet the same was true for Ford entry.

Jon,  was the battery access from the top or front?

Why did they do it?  Easier to access from the trunk.

1109rwhp - looks where I am thinking for mine.  My cage has the same bar.  Did you build a stand so the battery is level as the trunk floor drops?  I don't get the switch on the back side of the battery.

John - looks fantastic.  My fuel filter is there and that's where my fuel lines will run to the center console and to the front of the car.

The Die Hard is right.  I know they sponsored NASCAR and what says '72 better than Sears?  I've never tried to explain the Sear's Christmas Catalogue to my kids or the excitement of marking all the things I wanted...

I was looking into reproduction batteries and stock trays as the straps will be right.  I have found Delco.  Wonder if somone makes a Die Hard.

Delco would be a good second as it is GM.  Keep it in the family. 

I am going to mount mine in the trunk now that I am building to '72 rules.  I have some pictures of the Gray Ghost's trunk-mounted battery and they used a simplestrap and a lot of electrical tape to seal the ends.  Fantastically crude and practical.

Anyone have a good recomendation for a battery set up which is period correct?

Tar tops, stock battery tray and bracket the way to go for a Trans Am recreation?

Best source for a battery?  Best reproduction trays and brackets?

 Looking at the Penske cars at Amelia Island, I noticed something new.  Besides how pretty and successful the cars were...

One of the First-Gen Camaros has Penske Godsall on the fender.  In '70 Godsall partnered with Titus for the Pontiac effort.  Titus left a successful Mustang team and Godsall left the Captain.

What's the story? 

Simple as uncharted territory and opportunity to shine?  Was this marriage started with the intent to court BFGoodrich as Ford/Shelby/Terlingua and Chevy/Penske were too expensive or unwilling to take the BFG risk to break into?

Trans-Am Camaros / Original GM Trans-AM Second Gen GM Coil Springs?

I have a set of springs which supposedly came from the Hall Chaparral collection.

Part number is X779B440.  I was told this was an experimental GM number. Presumably they are 440#.  I had them tested at an oil-field spring facility--426# and 430# respectively on a very cool compression machine.  Crazy cage around it; I suspect they do so big springs...

Dimensions are .711 wire, 9 coils and 16” free.   I am not sure of the compressed height between the spring pocket and lower A-arm; I'll measure today.

Anyone have a way to decipher and confirm/deny the part number?

Nit-pick rule question for Oldtimer, Jon or anyone...

Both the '71 and '72 GCR say dry sump tanks must be in front of the firewall.   Section E, 17.

My read of the rules is like the Penske/Donohue Javelin did it.  It looks like they put it where the batteries were—in the alcove that juts into the passenger-side footwell.

However, people who were there or owned one say the tanks sat on the floor inside.

Not enforced?  What’s most correct as most used?

I've changed twice how I am going to do mine--cutting and making sheetmetal for the battery, removing it and making a pop-rivited panel and then drilling it out again.  Ugh.
