Maintenance / I need a bit of help... (Vacuum and PCV)
« on: October 10, 2010, 04:39:35 PM »
I feel a little dumb about asking what I'm about to ask, but I need some help from folks who know their way around an original 327. I've included pictures below to aid in what I'm talking about.

When I bought my 67 (with original 327, aftermarket Edlebrock Performer Intake Manifold and Carburetor) whoever had done the motor work had done some weird stuff to it. The plain jane chrome valve covers they used had a total of four breather caps, and no PCV set up. The thing was slowly blowing oil all over the valve covers, as I suspect the crankcase has too much pressure in it, and fine particles of oil were getting all over. I was constantly having to wipe it down. Also (see pictures below), there was this 'thing' that I would like to assume is some type of original PCV valve, at the back of the engine near the distributor. The vac line coming off of it went to the main vac port on the carb. Well, I decided to figure out what was going on, and dig into this a little bit.

So, I pulled off the main vac line to the 'thing', and discovered that someone had plugged the main vac tube in the carb with a sealant, and in the hose attached to it, had stuffed a tire valve cap and more sealant. Obviously to prevent it from doing what it was suppose to do. I figured this was the source of my problem. So I set out to buy new valve covers, with only two holes (one in each cover for for breather caps, and PCV valve) instead of the four I had. I got them installed, put on a new Edlebrock breather cap in one, and in the other, I hooked up a PCV valve and ran it to a 'T' connector at the main vac port on the carb, and hooked it up. On the other end of the "T" I hooked up that original vac line that was clogged and going to the 'thing' at the back of the engine. (Yes, I cleaned out the tube, and cut off about 2 inches of vac line to get out the sealant and the valve cap). I also took the time to change my spark plugs (the old ones came out, did not look completely 'normal', and appeared to be slightly 'wet', with a mild build up on the 'ground' (side) electrode). I gapped the new ones at .035).

Anyway, the engine is burning oil... slightly. I can see it exit each exhaust pipe... so whatever is causing the oil to burn is happening on both sides of the engine (as I have a dual exhaust system). I have not done a compression test yet, but am about to. (Side note, any idea of what kind of compression I should be seeing in this stock 327 on each cylinder?)

I figured the most likely culprit of this oil situation is the incorrect PCV set up... and before I go crazy, I'd like to know everything I'm dealing with... and for starters, WHAT is this 'thing' in the back of the engine block near the distributor? I don't believe it to be a oil pressure sending unit...

Let me add, I'm a novice when it comes to motors. I can do just about anything else with this car, and understand the fundamentals of engine operation, but am admitting to needing help with the more intimate operations of an engine, and this problem.

Any constructive help/criticism would help me. Thanks for your time everyone...

and I have it set up now...

Maintenance / Re: Can you help identify this part? (Braking System)

Thanks Mark....

Any reason to think I should replace it based on the condition of the master cylinder, and if so, where can I find one?

Maintenance / Can you help identify this part? (Braking System)
« on: September 09, 2010, 02:43:21 AM »
This item is below my MASTER CYLINDER. I have four wheel drum (manual) in this 67 base coupe. My brake fluid looks like coffee, and the master cylinder has a nasty gooey substance sitting in the bowls. I'm replacing everything in the brake setup.... and I don't know what this part is. That larger item on the right side middle is some sort of electrical plug and the wire disappears into the firewall through a connector just right of this picture, which I believe is the dash brake light. There's no markings on it, and I want to replace it along with a new master cylinder and all the lines... I don't know if it's some sort of metering valve, or proportioning valve, or pressure regulator. I can't find a part that resembles it at many of the parts dealers, and what I do find that resembles it says it's for disc/disc, or disc/drum, and I need drum/drum.

Two lines from the master cylinder come down to it, then it has two front lines out, one for each side of the car, and then one slightly larger line to the rear...

Can anyone help with this, identify it, and then point me in the direction of a repro, or NOS replacement. Thanks...

This sucks... another one bites the dust. Competition in the business place is a good thing for the consumer cause it keeps prices down... Found this online...

Long time muscle car parts retailer The Paddock has apparently closed its doors for good? The retailer closed April 30th and had been closed for well over a month. Vendors to the company have noted that things have been amiss for sometime, and that the company had been slow to pay. The Paddock had been supplying restoration parts and accessories since 1965 for Mustang, Camaro, Dodge Charger, Chevelle, MOPAR, Challenger, Ford trucks, and Chevrolet truck.

The following article appeared in the local Knightstown newspaper on May 2nd.

KNIGHTSTOWN – Rumors circulated Knightstown this week after a handwritten “closed” sign was placed on the door of The Paddock.

The muscle car part distribution center has been a Knightstown mainstay since 1965. This week, though, multiple Paddock employees said the business has closed.

Calls seeking confirmation to Paddock Owner Wes Watts’ listed home phone number were not answered.

On Thursday, a handwritten sign on the front door said “Sorry we are closed” but did not indicate a reason, or if the closure was permanent.

Inside the dark showroom, a long row of tables was covered in open boxes. The doors were locked, and the parking lot was deserted during normal business hours.

Two customers came to the door and were surprised to find it closed. One man said he’d stopped by the building around the same time in the past and it had always been open.

Phone calls to The Paddock went straight to what seemed to be the normal after-hours message.

County Councilman Mike Thalls said people who lived in the area of The Paddock told him the business had closed. But on Friday, he said, he was unable to reach a business official.

If the business is closed for good, though, it’s a surprise to Thalls. He said The Paddock was granted a $1.9 million tax abatement on its Ind. 109 building. It was a 10-year abatement, he said, with two years left.

Each year the business must file a compliance form saying it has the amount of employees it’s supposed to have. Thalls said The Paddock has been one of the first businesses to turn in its form each year.

If it’s closed the business is required to report to the council. That hadn’t happened as of Friday, Thalls said.

“As far as we knew there wasn’t anything bad going on,” he said. “Then all of the sudden, this happens.”

According to The Paddock’s website, the business started as a small shop where founder Jim O’Neil restored muscle cars. Eventually Mustang restoration parts became the focus, the website states.

The business was incorporated in 1979, and O’Neil started manufacturing steel patch panels. A small Mustang catalog was printed, followed by a Camaro catalog in 1980, according to the website.

The company grew by word of mouth, and finally outgrew the small facility. So it was moved to a larger location on Main Street.

O’Neil decided to pursue other interests in 1998, the website states, and Wes Watts, who started working for The Paddock in 1980, became the owner.

Finally it was moved to the current facility just outside of town on Ind. 109.

Amy Blackwell, president of the Knightstown Chamber of Commerce, said The Paddock sold automobile parts throughout the nation. It was known throughout the country, she said, and it was a hub of sorts for specialty car parts.

“It’s a great loss,” she said.

PJ, X-77 is correct. When they built the engines, they put the ACTUAL year in the cast date. So that cast date is an october 67 cast, for a 68 model. The car is bogus... which really sucked, cause when I came across it, I was jazzed. It's a nice car, but with a different VIN on the body stampings than the VIN tag, I wouldn't want to own it.

@nuts4coke, forgot to mention in last post.  If you're trying to stay original, you need to replace the Drivers door mirror, thats a '68.   It should have around one, and from feedback and research I've done our "Early" '67's should have the Bowtie on the back.

I need to update the pics. I already replaced that mirror. It was the FIRST thing I did after owning the car about 7 days. LOL

UPDATE: I called the authorities in michigan where this dealer is at, and they went and looked at the car. They called me back, and they 'think' it's not stolen, but they are getting with the state of tennessee to run the two VINS.

YES, I said two VINs. They looked at the stamped VINs on the body, and it did not match. This is a bastard car, and suspect. Here's the link... you guys can check this out, but I do not think this car is what he says it is.

P.S. Read the ad. I told him it didn't have 3.23 gears in back, but he didn't listen. Still has it posted that way... and this is after he gave me all the stampings on the axle. This car has been there awhile.

Roger copy.... i get it. Thanks for the clarification. I really don't want to mess with this one too much other than getting rid of the junk on it... but I had a brake line bust on me this weekend.. the one to the passenger front. i need to replace that line. I pulled open the master cylinder, and OH MY GOD it looks like coffee in there.... so now I'm planning on replacing the entire brake system.... just thought while I was at it, i would consider dumping the drums for disc, and add power, then i could get away with rally's, and the car 'could have' come from the factory that way, so I wouldn't be altering the 'stock'ness of it.... so to speak, at least that was my thinking. I wanted other input.

check this out. Notice the 'drum covers' that make it look like there's a disc in there? LOL, I did some 'photoshop' to the drivers side to see what it would look like without that cover in there, and i think it makes the wheel stand out more, so I'm getting rid of the covers, and sandblasting the drums, and then painting them.... until I get rallys... then it won't matter.

Anyway, by messing with valuable cars, I'm assuming you mean SS350's, Z28's, etc... cars 50k and up? I mean, value is a relative term. I've seen Mecum/Barret-Jackson cars go for way more than they should because someone wanted something... While i like clone or 'tribute' cars also, I'm not turning this into one. i want to be able to say 'it's stock', with the original drivetrain... but as I said, I've got brakes to deal with now.

I will see if I have those pics of the radiator here at work. Maybe on my phone. While she may not be a survivor, or even a performance model, she's my first 1st gen, and I didn't pay alot of money for her, it was all about owning a numbers matching October 66 car. I'm still on the look out for other 67's though, and some day I will own a 69. Hopefully a Z, but I have humble beginnings, and an even more humble bank account.... I hope I'm reading your post wrong as kind of a "looking down on your car" attitude. I could be wrong, but I only have 15k tied up in this car... and I think she's worth more, especially once I remove the bull$hit someone put on her....

Anyone know the fate of the parts company 'The Paddock'? I ordered their catalog about three months ago, got it, and have been to their web site. About a month ago, the web site had everything at 'out of stock', and now when you go there (www.paddockparts.com) there is a simple statement saying 'we are closed'. I've called their two numbers, both toll free and the commercial number, and it's disconnected. The toll free just tells you their hours.

They had a nice facility. I suppose a victim of the economy. Does anyone know if one of the other major parts companies snagged up their inventory?

Just curious ???. Thanks...
