Originality / Re: Black Firewall Paint
« on: January 26, 2010, 11:58:08 PM »
I'm still convinced that although 99.5% of the cars got the blackout, some did not.  68 was a strike year at GM and I've been told that it's not uncommon to find all sorts of "strange" things on cars that year.
Still want more Sequoia Green owners to chime in :)

Hey Chris,
You've got yourself a beautiful and rare car there. I just found a special order paint 68 with evidence of a body colored firewall.

It's really sad...and wrong...that these "Associations" that are supposed to be promoting and preserving the history of these cars would even consider telling you to alter (not restore to original...the way you found it) the color of your firewall because they're too lazy to learn or accept something new or out of the norm...even when you have very compelling photographed documentation backing up the details that set your car apart from other Camaros.

Basically, they're trying to force you to change your Camaro from a fingerprint into a belly button.

I'm glad to hear that you did the right thing and kept the firewall the way it apparently lef the factory and that your car scored so high at the show. It's also great that you didn't end up having too much problem with the item that sets your car apart from all the other cars.  I hope I can see your car in person in the future.

Decoding/Numbers / F-Code...not X-Code
« on: December 07, 2009, 09:19:50 AM »
There's not much info in the books about the LOS and VN cowl tags.

Here's a different code on the Cowl Tag.  Instead of an X-Code it's an F-Code...  :)  It appears to be a Fisher Body plant assembly number that is typically located above the "BODY" in the upper right hand corner on the '68 tag.  I've also seen a D096 stamped in this area on a '69 VN cowl tag.  It appears to be a LOS and VN deal not talked about.

The pinstripes on that black '67 are split also.

That's strange.  I had not noticed that.  Thanks.

Has anyone tried the new Al Knock deluxe door panels?  They don't have their Camaro website up yet, but apparently they're selling the parts now...if you call them and ask.

Apparently you could get the red stripe on black for '69...at least according to the correctly restored COPO.

According to the Assembly Manual (which isn't always right), the Z21 pinstripes were used in conjunction with the nose stripe (with a .375" gap between the two).  Here's an old picture of a Dana Camaro that came to my mind:

and the very well known Hot Rod Test Car -I have tons of pics of this car from 67 with the same stripes.

So according to your experience, this is a possible color combo, just not common.  What would the trim tag show in regards to the color of a stripe?  Are you suggesting that this would only be a custom order paint which means it would have a dash in the paint code?

Restoration / Steering wheel restoration?

Has anyone here had good luck with having a steering wheel restored?  If so, who restored it?

Thanks,

Restoration / Black 67 with red nose stripe?
« on: September 08, 2009, 07:15:51 PM »
Is it possible to have a black '67 Camaro with red interior, red pinstripes, and red nose stripes?

Can this color combo be original?

Thanks,

Very possible the sub frame was swapped. I know mine was after a crash by a previous owner. 67's and 68's are interchangable

Yeah.  My car was a parts car for a guy who was building another Camaro. I know it's not the original frame. It's not the original front sheetmetal either. The doors and deck lid are original...but that's beside the point.  :)  The reason I would like to check the frame for some sign of production is because the CRG states:
"Subframe style: A mid-year change was instituted for 67 Camaro subframes. Large holes (about 3-inch dia.) were placed on the inside surface of each front frame "horn" to provide access to bumper bracket nuts.
The earlier frames used a slot in the outer surface of the frame horn to hold a J-nut (clip nut) for the bumper bracketry. The transition period for this change appears be circa November/December of 1966; we are attempting to gather more data to further refine the implementation date. An interesting note is that some frames have been found with the large hole on one frame rail and none on the other rail. Apparently such frames were built during the transition period from one style to the other, while making use of all existing frame stock. If you have a Camaro built from October to December of 1966, we would appreciate your car data, via the CRG Forum, including a note on which frame style you have."

My 67 frame has one of each type of frame horn, which could possibly be right at the end of the change-over before production ran out of the early style stamped frame horns. If I can somehow determine what month my frame was made...it could help the CRG narrow the search on the subframe switch-over in late 1966.  If only my car was late 66 production Camaro...  :)

Decoding/Numbers / Is there a stamp somewhere on the subframe...?
« on: May 23, 2009, 01:49:16 AM »
Hey guys,

Is there a date stamp somewhere on the subframe so I can find a date of build?  I have a strange 67 subframe on my 68. It has the round access hole for the late 67 on the passenger side and an early 67 frame rail plate on the drivers side without the access hole.  If I could find some sort of stamp on the frame, it might help pin-point when they changed over...since my frame must have been made right on the cusp of the change.

Here's your picture of the holes I'm refering to.

Decoding/Numbers / Strange Stamp on Firewall...
« on: May 21, 2009, 07:52:37 PM »
Hey Guys,

What is the strange stamp on the firewall below the hidden VIN under the heater ducting?  These numbers are VERY hard to read.  They are upsidedown just like the hidden VIN.
These are the two numbers I've found in two cars.  "R   L48" and "R  XorZ23"

The 68 that has the R L48 is an original SS and the L48 is an SS RPO.

The 68 that has the R XorZ23 is a Deluxe Interior car...if it is Z23...that's also an RPO.

Are these just coincidences that they may relate to RPO's of the cars they are stamped on?

Thanks,
Tony Huntimer

Restoration / Interior Door Panels
« on: April 16, 2009, 01:21:40 AM »
Who makes the best quality reproduction interior door panels?  Standard and Custom.  Does anyone make them complete...with the upper window felt strips stapled...instead of riveted?

Thanks,

Restoration / Re: Who makes the best glass?

Are you talking nice dated correct glass for restoration or just cheap replacement glass?

Jerry

Jerry, I'm looking to promote nice dated correct glass...if the business is worth promoting.

Thanks,
Tony Huntimer
