General Discussion / Re: Spark plug wire sets?
« on: December 31, 2011, 03:22:31 AM »
I used this wire set from MSD, in black. It does look a lot better when you route the wires the way you want them and can cut them to the right length. In my case I used chrome wire looms that run along the valve covers, keeping the wires away from the headers and a far neater finished look. I bought my parts locally but they are the same part # as Summit. High quality wires. I gapped the plugs at .045 and the engine runs great, though I hear some others have theirs gapped at .060

General Discussion / Re: Dealer Promotional Plastic Models?

Hey, that's a great piece. I've seen some cars like the Impala on Ebay but never a Camaro or Chevelle. I saw a mid-60's Corvette go for around $400 but that was a few years back. Ebay prices seem a lot lower now. Whenever they come up at live auctions here they usually go for $100+

These models came in plain white boxes with make and model stamped on the end with ink stamp, no graphics. Prices vary now from $50 upwards. I've seen a few Corvette ones go around $400. Given the ones you have are popular models of cars I would guess $200-$300 would be fairly accurate.

Cut and polish improves the paint 100%. There is a technique to it and it's best left to a professional. Once done the sun will highlight the curves better, and the paint will have that glass-like look everyone wants. You should wait a minimum three weeks to cut and polish, and longer if you can. My car was spayed a week ago, and I'll wait till the spring to do the cut and polish.

By the way, the door gaps and body lines on your car are exceptional. That body line where the fender meets the door can be tough on some 69's. Great job.

General Discussion / Re: Clue It Was GM employee car new

Having worked 26 years at a Chrysler assembly plant, I can verify that employees would follow their ordered car down the line and add some "extras". It was common when I was installing wheels and tires for employees to ask for a better tire/rim combo. That was in the 80's and 90's. Now cars are audited when they roll off the line, and then again checked by a seperate quality/security company before going to the shipping yard.

True story. When we first started making Intrepids a emplyee ordered a base model, followed it down the line, getting all the power options added on. The problem was he never thought to have the proper wiring harnesses installed. When the car reached the end of the final line, the operator doing the electrical test flagged the car as none of the power options worked. Long story short, car was audited, guy got fired, and rehired 6 months later.

I also remember a guy who worked at GM, and did the same thing. Ordered a base car with few options, then had it fully loaded going down the line. The car made it down the line and to the dealership. Problem was the salesman at the dealership realized that base car was now fully loaded, and the dealership was only charged for the base model. The dealership sold the car at a price that reflected the options on the car, and reordered the employees base model.

That Camaro looks great. Very well done. I've seen some people end up with what I call tiger stripes. The even flow on your car is fantastic. I actually loved the look of my car in the silver base. As for the question of masking, we use a foam tape, round and about the diameter of a penny. The round shape allows a soft blend, If you watch the video you might see the tape in the door jambs at the quarters, with the doors out slightly. This gives an even blend with no need to sand after.

I agree. Not sure why the guy even brought it up. I would have gotten my 6 cylinder powerglide upgraded to a V-8 with muncie 4 speed back in the day.

Had the front and back glass installed in my car yesterday. The glass guy said it was probably purchased new by a GM emplyee, because the studs that hold the clips for the stainless moulding were about 3 inches apart around both window channels. He said it was common for an employee to follow the car through the plant and get the guys to include extra studs. Never heard of this and think it might be someone's imagination. Anyone?

The Cortez Silver uses a darker base, which gives it that great silver color. The Synergy Green uses a sliver metallic base as the green is a candy with pearl tint. The sparkle you see in the green is actually the silver base. I have a '69 SS waiting for my next project. An original Cortez Silver car that someone painted an awful red color. One of my favorite original colors.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. The door jambs, under hood and decklid were all painted and cleared. You then use a soft line when painting the car, which gives you a nice blend rather than a hard line.

Clear coat has a longer period between coats, 20 minutes to a half hour. It's the same clear used on Jay Leno's eco car

Here's a video showing my car being painted. Long process. 3 base coats of silver, 3 color coats of green, and 3 coats of clear. Video doesn't really capture the green fully.

General Discussion / Opinions on this '68

Being in Canada it's pretty hard to find survivor cars because of the climate and salt that was used on roads. Just came across this "68 RS. I know quite a few of the regulars on here can spot things incorrect to a true survivor. How does this one look? It's less than an hour from where I live.
