General Discussion / Re: 1969 Z28--Mono or multi leaf?

Yes the cowl tag matched the VIN on the dash.  I'm gonna take it one step further and check the hidden VINS on this car and see if those numbers match as well.  I just found out today that the 12 bolt rear end is from another Camaro probably a 67..  :'(  It's amazing what you can find out when you put a car on the rack and start looking at the numbers and ask people who know about these things.   Thanks for all the feedback guys, you really were a big help.  However, my buddy is not so happy now that his restoration is gonna cost a lot more time and money trying to find a 69 12 bolt rear end.  Bottom line is never trust even the most reputable seller on ebay.  Always get pictures of the numbers and if you can spend a couple hundred bucks and go look at the car in person--DO IT-- it will be money well spent.  If the seller sends you blurry pictures or is never available then it's probably a fraud.

Will check the axle tube. Thanks.

Question #2--- did the Z28 come stock with a steering wheel with SS emblem in the center?

Ok guys here is a question that has me a bit confused. My buddy is selling his 1969 Z28 and when we put it on the rack to inspect the undercarriage I noticed that this vehicle has mono leaf springs.  What is quite interesting to me is all the research I have done indicates that 1969 Z28’s came with multi leaf springs.  The cowl tag (which appears to have the original rivets and the VIN matches the dash and the documentation) says the car is an X77 car that decodes to a Z28.  Also the car has a 12-bolt rear end.  So my question is did the 1969 X77 car ever come with mono leaf springs on the rear end from the factory?  Also steering wheel has SS emblem in the center.

Thanks for all the info.  I'll try and post a few pic's later this week to include the cowl tag.

General Discussion / 69 Z28 Question
« on: August 18, 2006, 10:01:30 PM »
Hello All,

Similar to the previous thread regarding the 69 Z/28. I have several friends who are muscle car owners but none can really give me a definitive answer on how to identify a fake vs. real thing.

Been seriously considering making an offer on one for sale in my town but don't want to make a mistake and overpay for a fake.  According to the owner the car I'm looking at is an original Z28 except for the motor, which is a big block instead of the 302.  Unfortunately he doesn’t have any documentation to prove it authenticity.

My question is can I determine from the VIN # whether this particular car was the Z28 package from the factory.  I read through all of the literature on the decoding section on this site but there is so much going on there I cant make heads or tails of it.

Can anyone give me a simple answer on this topic or lead me to a website/books etc to help me make an educated decision.

Thanks.
