Restoration / Console gauge base mounting - 69 Camaro

I am restoring my console gauges and am wondering where to get the hardware to attach the green plastic gauge base to the console? The old gauge base was broken and only had one of the required four fasteners. The fastener is threaded differently on each end - One end is a male taper thread and the other a straight machine thread, with a hex between the two. What else is needed, besides these wierd fasteners?

Well, my California plates finally arrived from Australia.
Black and yellow, XTR xxx.
I did some research online, and by removing the registration tags one at a time.
Here's what I discovered:

I checked out a lot of pictures of cars online that have readable black and yellow California plates.
Near as I can tell 1967 vehicles had high T's (TRW, TWY) through low to mid V's (VAM, VEL); 1968 vehicles had mid V's (VNK) to high X's (XPV); 1969 vehicles had high X's (XUL, XXP) to the end of the Z's (ZQX). Note: (_ _ _) denotes the actual letters I found for that particular year of vehicle.

Then I did a little archaelogical digging on my plates by carefully removing the registration stickers one at a time and recording them. What I discovered is that the earliest sticker is 1968. It is located in the upper right hand rectangular recess, then the 1969 sticker is in the upper left hand recess. The yearly stickers alternate back and forth from one side to the other: 1970 on right, 1971 on left, 1972 on right. There is no 1973 sticker. There is a 1974 sticker on the right and an OCT sticker on the left. The OCT sticker was on the top of the stack when I bought the plates. The year stickers on the right continue all the way up to 1978.

Based upon this, I can deduce that the plate was issued in October 1968 and it was continuously registered until 1978.

My 1969 Camaro was built in the 2nd week of October 1968, so these plates, originally registered in October 1968, are a pretty good match!

I have written to the Governor to ask him to sign an updated YOM law that would allow black and yellow plates to be put back onto vehicles of the same vintage. I received a reply asking for more information. It stated that the Governor is very interested in this issue. Maybe we a close to getting this resolved.

I've been here off and on. Just haven't had time to even think about working on my 69 Camaro for a while, so no questions to ask until now. I've always been Hugger Orange 69.

Carb is Edelbrock 4bbl. I think it is a 500CFM.
When I look in the Classic Industries catalog I don't see a replacement listed.

<edit> It is a single line fuel inlet. Though it is not an original carb, it is the original sending unit and it works fine except for the fact that it does not send a signal to the fuel gauge, which is a pain I want to correct. Can I simply measure the tube inlet at the carb and go by that?

I know the plates are not allowed currently, but I am hoping that will change someday and I want to have a set that I can switch to when it does.

My brother bought his 69 SS while he was in the Army in Vietnam. His begins with "Z". I think he picked the car up in San Francisco upon his return in about June of 69.

I am wondering what the correct license plate letter sequence would be for my 69 Camaro? It was built in Van Nuys in October of 68 and purchased in Torrance, but I do not know the month or year of original registration. Can someone help me find this information?

The car currently has blue and yellow plates and I want to look for the correct sequence black and yellows.

That's right, 350 and 396 were the only engines available in the SS.
Mine is an SS clone with a 327.


Maintenance / Alternator (GEN) light on when key is off.

I just had to replace the battery in my 69 Camaro.  When I reconnected the cables I noticed that the alternator light was on even before putting the key into the ignition.  When I start the engine the light goes off, but when I turn the car off the light comes back on and stays on.  I have to remove the cables to protect the battery from draining.  I am not very good with electrical problems.  When I remove the connector with two wires from the alternator and connect the battery the light does not come on.  I also notice a click from the voltage regulator every time I connect and disconnect the battery cables.  Could the alternator be bad?  What about the voltage regulator?

Some additional background: I have had a battery discharge problem since I purchased the car 5 years ago.  I think I have isolated that problem to the door switch.  Since I had the typical starter solenoid/heat problem, I switched to a mini-mag starter about a year ago.  This solved the heat problem, but not the battery discharge problem, so I recently returned to the stock starter and added a heat blanket.  When I installed a new battery last week, the alternator light issue popped up.  I have a Pertronix ignition system and a Code Alarm system that is tied into the previously mentioned faulty door switch. The alarm also operates the door locks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 ???I was interested to read this thread because I have been experiencing the battery drain problem on my 69 Camaro for the last five years and have not been able to correct it.  Yesterday, I tried the suggested test.  I disconnected the neg cable and took a reading from the pos battery post to a chassis grnd.  It showed amps draining, so I moved to the fuse panel to start removing one fuse at a time to isolate the circuit with the problem.  I never got to the fuses though.  As soon as the driver's door was opened the meter went to zero.  I guess that means that the door switch is faulty, so I am going to replace it.  Very good suggestion!  Thanks!

I have an additional electrical problem that has just cropped up, I'll post it outside this thread.
