What date is the KC show?

Hi Steve, maybe you should have a monthly feature car. Instead of three cars just one. Other web sites do the same that way ya wont run out of cars to post. 1 nice big pic with the car in front of some nice scenery. Also maybe an engine bay shot and interrior shot and a little story about the car. That would make us all go out and take more pics of our cars again!!!! ;D . Just my 2 cents. Ron C

Ron,

Great idea.  That would be a great feature to this site.  A little history behind a featured car of a member each week or each month.  People love the reader's rides type stuff, myself included.

Thanks guys, I was afraid it was a loose equipment type of thing.  I'm surprised any of them still exist.  Man I sure would like to have that info.  So without the POP, I probably have no way of telling which 396 mine came with?  It's not the original 396 in the car right now, but I believe everything else to match.

I've found plenty of information on the board breaking down the codes from the Protect-O-Plate, and I understand what it looks like, but where are they located?  Was this just loose equipment form the factory, or should my '68 have one affixed somewhere on the car?  I'd really like to get the low down on the options other than cowl tag and VIN.

Wow, thanks everyone.  I guess this must have been a dealer installed top.  That just blows me away.  I wonder how most 1st. gen. camaro enthusiasts would feel about this being considered original?  It has had it since it was new, but not from the factory... hmmm.  I do appreciate the feedback.  This is very interesting to discover.

Hmmm... didn't think about that being an option, 2nd owner of car, had it since '69, and always had a black vinyl top.  This thing sure looks factory to me, might be worth researching I guess.  Thanks.  Any more advice from anyone?  Possible late change at factory?  Mistake made on the line?

This is my cowl tag.  I was trying to figure out the original vinyl top color which should be 2- for black, but mine is -0 for ???  I got the 0 for the Corvette Bronze body color, but what does this other 0 stand for?  Anyone?

Wow, great resto. pics guys... factory overspray and all.  Man what issues we have!  We should all probably be checked into the funny farm for appreciating something this meticulous.  Sweet.  Hail to the 1st gens.

So where does everyone get all of their information from?  I have a body tag and a VIN, but those don't get me all the goodies.  Some of these guys know what their original interior options were and all kinds of neat details.  How do they find this stuff?

Thanks guys, it looks like this is a factory option custom interior w/headrest option.  I just haven't seen much of them, even on convertible and other high options cars.  I sure wish I had a build sheet on this car.  I just can't get every option answer without it you know.  I've had some pretty large offers and some real jaw-dropping going on over this car since I took it out of hibernation though.  When I started working on it, I didn't think it was all that special.  I've had several people now inform me of what I'm dealing with.  It's amazing how many people want to strike up a conversation at a car show over something that is dull, and the tires are dry-rotted, but they really know how to spot the special stuff I guess.

I am having a hard time finding another '68 RS/SS with this style of bucket seat.  Does anyone know if this is possibly correct, like a rare seat option?  The only thing I'v seen that is close is in a '69.  This is the only weird thing about this car, although I haven't seen another one with the huge m/c and  4 caliper front disc brakes, but I know that was an option on this RS/SS.

Maintenance / Low brake pedal after booster installation?
« on: March 03, 2006, 01:20:37 AM »
I just noticed that the brake pedal is relatively low compared to the clutch pedal now that I've installed the new booster.  Is this normal?  I can't remember if it was like that before or not.  I think the pedals were about the same height off the floor.  I checked the pedal rod length on the old booster and the new one and they were the same.  Come to think of it, I didn't compare the pushrod from the booster to the m/cyl.  Could they have been different lengths?  I think I need some help on this one.  I hung on to the core booster until I knew that the new one fixed my hissing problem, then once it was done, I returned it for core credit.  Now I wish I would have waited so that I could check that rod length.  Any ideas here guys?

Thanks for all the answers everyone.  I did break down and replace this hissing booster and it solved my problem.  The brakes also feel about ten times more, "there."  This car had an engine fire long ago and I think it probably trashed that internal diaphragm.  Anyway, about $1000.00 later and all new brakes from top to bottom and front to back, I have a great pedal and reliable stopping power.  Next project... um suspension  :-\

Maintenance / Re: Muncie 4 spd. oil?
« on: March 02, 2006, 01:04:58 AM »
Okay.  Thanks guys.  I just picked up some 80/90W from O'Reilly's.  Wow, that stuff has gone up right along with everything else I guess.  I hope I didn't tear up this tranny going down the street and back.  I knew I should have checked it first, but figured that it at least had some oil in it.  I got the inside scoop last night though and I think this might have been a sabatoge type situation by the guy who worked on this car last.  I think he was wanting the tranny to shell, then have the car brought back to him, just so he could lowball her on the price and pick up this '68 RS/SS 396 for a song.  The nerve of some people.  This guy has a reputation in our small town for other such situations.
