The reason that I suggested XXXXXX for the body number is to leave no doubt that it is a replacement tag. Not all buyers in the distant future will know what a replacement tag looks like if it were to have 6 numeric digits for the body number, unless they are blatantly obvious (like 999999). After all, it is still going to be a repro tag so why not make it very easy to spot even by someone like me that can't really distinguish a repro from a real one.

Why not put XXXXXX for the body number on the repro trim tag along with the other data you already stated? And, before you attach it stamp "REPRO" on the tag so that there will never be a question about it being a replacement tag.

I restored one with the same colors in 2001 (wish that I hadn't) that I owned for about 4 years. Extremely good looking combination. Last I heard it was in NJ.

Your suffix if HD  = 1969 350/250 hp with turbo 350 trans, 2 bolt mains. I beleive that block was also used for other small block sizes and could receive 4 bolt mains if it was a higher hp model.

Big block will have a different heater core cover, engine mounts, fan shroud, etc. The only true way to know is with paperwork for a '68. If it indeed had a 396 originally then it had to be an SS.

I can't help with the axle decode but here is the decode for the engine:
T072IHO = assembled July 21. Could be either a 1965 327/300 w/pwrgld (Corvette) or 1969 350/300 B-body.

You should NOT have removed the tag. The car will always be suspect from now on unless it can be replaced without detecting it's removal.

The L30/M20 also received the 4P code since it was the unofficial SS327.

You can click on the "Decoding" button at the top of the page to get this info but here it is:
V8 coupe assembled in Norwood, Ohio in the second week of October 1968 (10B).
Exterior color is Garnet Red (52 52) and the interior is Ivory (727).
That is as far as it can be decoded without further investigation of all of the other components.

I owned a 1969 Z/28 that was Hugger Orange/Black vinyl top that had the Orange Houndstooth (720) interior. It also had it's original drivetrain. I should have NEVER sold that car. It was very unusual but I loved the colors. As a matter of fact, I still have the original seat covers from that car in the attic.

I don't know the car but from the info you supplied it was a V8 coupe, assembled the 4th week of March 1968 (03D), black standard bucket seat interior (712) and had special paint (- -). I doubt that it was originally Hugger Orange but you never know. I'm not sure if that was a GM color in 1968. You can look in hidden areas on the body to find what the original color was.
You didn't mention anything about having paperwork or original drivetrain to verify the SS/RS options. If it is an original SS/RS, I say restore the car.
