General Discussion / Re: 1967 rear spoiler question
« on: August 15, 2018, 07:06:13 PM »
Problem with boards, lack of sleep and oxycontin combine to have my misleading or misunderstood comments.
I will not argue with the Radio Antenna sheet that was posted. But that is not the issue. I was only saying if you have a rear antenna you did not get a spoiler, regardless of radio ordered. When the 1968 Price Schedule was produced was prior the the Dealer Installed Spoiler was an option. Common problem when electrical engineers and body engineers do not talk to one another.  For it came clear the problems with a rear antenna and spoiler hitting each other every time the trunk lid was raised. Thereby it was issued that no rear antenna car would receive a spoiler.
So if a buyer wanted the dealer installed rear spoiler and also wanted a radio that called for a rear antenna; you bet they changed the prescribed location and placed it on the front fender, so the spoiler could be mounted. Here you have the issue of a engineering plan that is not feasible and the entrance of  real world solutions.

My original post was more of a rant at seeing so many spoilers combined with rear antennas that were not factory nor dealer installed but by a yahoo that though it would look cool. Just as I hate all the clone RS cars, just makes me always having to defend my true RS.

Garage Talk / Re: Trying to find the family car. 1966 Impala SS396
« on: August 14, 2018, 05:50:07 PM »
Best Guess it was purchased in Evansville Indiana. It was my Uncles home of record. So far all that I have found is a few photos and a 1969 Missouri Inspection Card for which I obtained the VIN. A collection of letters back in the 1960's will be the last to research; I am sure the letters between my Mother and Father (Vietnam) will mention the car, she always hated stick-shifts.

I have been slowly going through the paperwork of my late parents. Somewhere is the Window Sticker to my Fathers 1964 Corvette Fuelie. My goal is to find as many family rides as I can, then pass them down to the next generations. First is to find the original cars, if impossible I will build the closest replicas that I can. But finding the Originals would be the best.

Are there any Law Enforcement types out there that can identify where my old family car may be. I would love to get it back, very fond memories. The cars original owner was my Uncle, who bought it when he left the Marine Corps. He could not keep up with payments, so my Father bought it. All was fine until he left for Vietnam, Mom hated a stick-shift, so when he returned in '70 it was sold for a Big Buick Boat with an automatic.

Maintenance / Re: 396 engine rear main seal replacement
« on: August 12, 2018, 09:07:09 PM »
Rope seals have to be trimmed, if done improperly it will result in a leak.

Also, be careful with the RTV, I bought my 73 Vette 454 cheap because they thought the motor was going out for it showed very low oil pressure. Brought the Vette, pulled pan and main cap, all looked fine. Replaced oil filter but first pulled screen. Come to find out, the screen was filled with RTV and restricting oil flow. Cleaned screen and oil pressure was perfect.

So be careful very careful when using sealer.

Seeing that it is a fresh rebuild, important question, did you break in the cam? I.E. 2,500 RPM 20 minutes initial run time.

I will throw in my two cents:

This may not be your problem but I believe it may help someone out there.

I had taken on a truck that had a locking of the brake issue. First the basics:

Cars with Front disc-drum rear it will have a Master Cylinder that has a large front small rear reservoir. Cars with drum-drum or disc-disc brakes will have equal sized reservoirs.

So back to this truck, it had disc-drum set-up, from the factory, so large-small MC. He replaced the rear drums with discs, for that cool 4 wheel disc feeling, without changing the MC to equal reservoirs. Drive, hit the breaks and a rear wheel would lock up and stay that way unless you bleed the line.

Simple fix was to replace the Master Cylinder. Done Deal.

Hope this may help someone now or in the future.

According to the options spreadsheet, RPO U73 Antenna, manual, rear mount, was only available with an AM radio.  All the AM/FMs RPO U69 or U79  had a front mounted, fixed height antenna mast

I guess I have a very rare 68 for according to the protect-o-plate it cam with a am/fm radio and the antenna is in the rear.

Factory spoiler cars have their radio antenna on the front right fender, reason as follows. Cars built without spoiler have a rear mounted radio antenna, when adding a spoiler, it will slap the antenna when trunk lid is opened.

Restored cars that have no antenna means it has received replacement Sheetmetal, for new metal does not have a hole for the antenna because they do not know which it is to be and leaves it to the bodyshop to cut a hole where it needs to be.

Why Repop when you can get originals for under $100
Just came across this on craigslist OKC.

My thoughts went to Neutral Safety Switch as well.
Easy to check, go to the switch and work your way back.

I have replaced several without pulling engine. Basically remove cap, snake out upper seal, snake new seal in, replace cap, RTV. Corners, boom your done.

PS the above is not for the “Rope Type” seal but rather the rubber style.
