Originality / hood/headliner insulation question-1969 Z28
« on: October 12, 2022, 09:18:46 PM »
Did a 1969 Z28 come with hood insulation if it didn't have the cowl induction setup?  My Z28 has the hood scoop w/302 emblems but no cowl induction air cleaner.

Did the car come with insulation above the headliner?

I am starting to restore it for the 2nd time (I've had it for 40 years) and want to get it right.

Maintenance / 12 bolt posi oil / Muncie 4 spd oil recommendations
« on: October 07, 2022, 11:34:19 PM »
Does the team have a recommendation for gear oil for a 12 bolt posi ('69 Z28) and for a Muncie 4 spd?  I have read several posts about using GL4 instead of GL5 for the Muncie due to synchro wear, is that accurate?  Is there a recommended brand or two?

For the diff, does it need to be GL4 or 5, does it matter? In most stores, all you find is GL5.  I will add the GM limited slip additive to whatever oil I get.  Thanks.

Attached is a photo of my differential date code on a 69 Z28, 07A car,  BU 0624G2 E.  On the diff, it also has 3894860NF, E189, and GM 57 numbers.  Reading through other posts it should have a C in front of the BU but I don't see one.  I'm new to the group and reading through history and adding info.  Hope this helps as you build data.  I really appreciate all of this great info.

Would a 1969 have a 5/50 warranty, or 12 months/12K miles back then?

Ed,
Does CC1 confirm the trans is not original?  If so, that's another surprise, and I'll check back with the 2 previous owners I know for more history.  I have had the car since 1982 and made no changes.  Just trying to decipher more of the car's history.  I checked the differential code and it is BU 0624 G2 so according to the notes the car was a late June or later build.  Thanks for all the help.

Attached are 2 photos of the 4 speed trans in my '69 Z28.  It is a Muncie 4 speed, case is 3925661.  The stamped codes look like CC1(a closer look may be CG1 or C61?), then 35585, but I can't correlate those into a final ID from the decode chart I received from the team.  Any help for a final ID would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Wow, great info, thank you.

Decoding/Numbers / Where to find date codes, etc. on 12 bolt diff - 1969 Z28
« on: September 30, 2022, 07:15:59 PM »
Where I can find the date codes and any other stampings on the 12 bolt differential on my 1969 Z28?  The diff has been undercoated and painted several times before I got it, and I want to know where to clean to find the numbers.  Attached is a photo showing some numbers I found on the right rear next to the diff cover.  Thanks for any help.

I finally connected with the owner of the car before the guy I bought it from.  He had it from 1974 to 1978 and told me he wore out the engine and a friend with a machine shop in St. Pete, FL replaced the block using the original parts from the 302.  This was 47 years ago so he has no idea what happened to the DZ block.  I rebuilt the engine when I got the car in 1982 and it had a 4" bore, 4 bolt mains, and the original 3" stroke crank.  The previous owner confirmed that original parts were used, just the block was replaced.  Now I know a little more about the history of the engine.

I got mine from Classic Ind., part number 2771967. That is a 15" pair of Anco refills.

I installed #67s in my rear inboard tail lights and they worked great.  Inboard and outboard are now the same brightness.

Thank you.  I bought the car from a friend in 1982, and he bought it in 1978, and at that time the engine had already been replaced.  I have the names of the 2 previous owners before my friend and am trying to connect with them and find out some more history.  Thanks again.
