General Discussion / Re: Barrel Key In Drivers Door Jamb
« on: November 28, 2005, 01:13:11 AM »
Alright its a 12v power interupt going to the accel HEI setup.  Basically instead of the power line running right to the ignition system it runs into the drivers door jamb then back through the firewall and to the accel unit.  This must have been done awhile ago, definately before the repaint.  I am amazed the car even runs with whoever did the wiring job on it. ;D  they retaped all the wires back up and ran this in the factory harness.

I pulled the number off the axle.  BP0708G.  Manufactured July 08 In detroit 1968 from the date stamp.  Axle ratio unfortunately 2.73:1 non posi.  So i guess its safe to say this was 100% not an SS unless someone swapped the motor and trans for an emission motor and swaped rear ends to a lower model.

One last question on this.  The car has a multi leaf setup in the rear.  Did all the v8 cars recieve this?

thanks

well the axle casting date is november 22, 1968.  The date on your fisher body tag, 11D, is the 4th week in november.  That puts them close and the axle is before the body.  Id say as long as your vin ends in around 20000 the numbers side of things looks good.  but i looked back through the model ID pages and the only 327 listed says export on it.  Was the 327 not offered in 69?

ill do that today. it just seemed weird.  If you look at the blurry pic you can see the sheet metal is recessed where the key is.  Just seemed odd to be an aftermarket item.  Ill post what i found.

General Discussion / Seat Belt?
« on: November 25, 2005, 11:40:41 PM »
This might be a stupid question but I was wondering about seat belt configurations for the 68.  I found, on this site, information about diifferent seat belts but mostly about the 67 convertable model.  The reason for asking, my car has shoulder belts on the headliner and rear belts but there is nothing else for the front seats.  From what i can see the seat belts mounted behind the console on the tranny tunnel. I suspect the carpet has been replaced because I cant find any holes to indicate where a seat belt might have been.  The only thing I saw was on the mounting brackets for the front seats.  the mount closest to the tranny tunnel has an additional hole and the bolts were slightly longer which I can only assume accomodated a seat belt bracket and a locator tab.  Does anyone have information and possibly some pictures from a 68 coupe interior.  My interior is standard buckets.

thanks

thanks paul.  someone told me that there should be schrader valves in the trunk area to pump them up more then likely.  Id say your guess would be correct.  I still havent been able to get in the trunk but im still trying.  Ill post here once i figure it out.

General Discussion / Re: Vinyl Top
« on: November 24, 2005, 03:16:59 PM »
i was born in 81 so i dont have much insight from back then.  I grew up watching my brother tinker with cars(a mechanic since 84).  im not new to cars by any means but the few classic cars that i was fortunate enough to own were either convertable or vinyl top cars.  I just realize that the vinyl tops when sitting are a horrible things for cars.  I personally like my 68 with the vinyl top on it more then ones without and this car will be kept inside and never see rain so im not too worry about the elements taking their toll.  Maybe its because of the trim that goes along with it that follows the body lines, not sure.  I know for a fact there is some rust underneath it because you can feel it but the condition of the vinyl top is excelent.  Were the factory vinyl top cars only primer underneath? or were they color match to the body?  Im just wondernig what im going to find underneath there when i pull it off.  No matter what i find after a repaint the vinyl top will be reinstalled.

thanks for your input

I was just wondering why you dont see many vinyl topped cars?  Were there few from the factory or after repaint do most guys leave them off?

thanks

i have a 68 built in norwood late in the model year.  it has the shoulder belt handing up on the headliner but i have no lap belts or any other belts with the front seat.  Did they attatch to the tranny tunnel or the rear of the seat mounting holes closest to the tranny tunnel?
thanks

thanks john.  The orig motor may or may not be where the car was, i have to do some digging. there is a complete small block there that im hoping matches the vin and will give me some better insight into this car.  unfortuately its about 4hrs away so i wont be up there for another week or so.  I did get some pictures of the car uploaded but obviously they really dont tell you anything.

sorry for the bad lighting, if it wasnt snowing outside id drive it out and take some good pictures in the light.

i also counted the turns on the hood springs.  it looks to be 26turns vs the SS 28 turns.  So that leaves me to ask what motor it had orig. since the vin tag says its a v8 car.  does that only leave the 327 or could it have been a 302?
