Hey John,

I wouldn't have believed it if you didn't post it.  BTW. did Jerry tell you the bolt was the wrong color?   ::)

Restoration / Recommendations of N/66 wheel restoration
« on: March 31, 2006, 11:24:50 PM »
Hi everyone,

I have 5 correct N/66 wheels that I want to restore for my 69 SS Camaro.  SS wheels were originally on my car, but I traded
them away back in 1980 thinking they were Chevelle & Nova only.   ::)

I'm interested in hearing from members here who have either restored their own, or had their N/66 wheels restored.

I had the wheels steel shot cleaned and primed 4 years ago in preparation for the restoration phase.  I want them to be
perfect and don't have access to a paint gun here.  Can I get a quality job from rattle cans, or should I send them out to
be restored?  Would any of you have a recommendation as to who can do a quality restoration on them for me?

Also, any ball-park on price for this restoration?  ???

Mine's original, and it's dark phosphate with a captured toothed washer.

Yep!  Sounds a lot like "just grab any bolt in the bin Spanky....."  ::)

John, do you have an image or two of that combo to share?  I'd like to see it.
BTW, what are your thoughts on what are considered correct finishes here?

Ken,

Don't you think the gold cad pieces associated with the booster look a little too "new" on this car?  They seem a little out of place - finish wise.
Would a 35+ year old booster look this nice?

Dave,

Your picture of the bolts sure seems to indicate that this bracket bolt was indeed silver cad plated.  I'd love to see an original low mileage car that
could give me a definitive answer on this.

Anyone know how to get in touch with Steve Shauger?  I know he has a creampuff of a low mileage all original L/34 69 Camaro.

Dave,

I've seen them gold cad ( like the bracket pictured ), black posphate & gray posphate.  Can't say I've ever seen a silver cad bolt though.

Anybody got a low-mileage original car that can verify for us?  These are the ^&#!%@#$# details I hate! ::)

Can anyone tell me the "correct" plating color to be applied to the bolt that connects the J52 power brake balance valve to its bracket?
I've seen it done many ways.  I'm betting only one way was correct.

This bracket mounts directly under the master cylinder on disc brake Camaros.  This is the little gem of a bracket:

Hi everyone,

Got a slightly off-center question.  Can someone post a couple good images of the "correct" original screws ( 6 or 7 - I believe ) that were used
to attach the ZL/2 flapper valve assembly to the sheet metal of the hood?  I need to find these little gems and you know they are next to impossible
to find as originals.  I'd like to see one image of the head & markings and one of the side view ( entire length ) if it isn't being too much of a PITA.

I really don't know what they look like as they disappeared from my hood way-way back when.....  :'(  Probably holding some $#@%^#@&^@*duct
work together somewhere........ ::)

General Discussion / Re: Adding console gauges and tach for 69 Camaro
« on: March 31, 2006, 12:23:08 AM »
Hi,

I can't answer your question directly as I haven't tackled that part of my project yet.

Regarding the console gauge package, Ron Norman @ McHenry Classic Car Parts sold me both options a while ago.  One was an aftermarket
harness that "hookes-in" to your existing non-gage harness.  As I recall, you can't tell from the console back.  Only if you really go digging under
the dash.  The other was a complete harness.  I'm betting the same is true of the tach.  You can contact him: mccp@voyager.net

Restoration / Re: Multi leaf springs
« on: March 30, 2006, 10:41:26 PM »
Joe,

There are a few things you need to read before making your choice. The first is an ORIGINAL THREAD regarding springs on the old forum. There's a link in one of the replies that will take you to a 1969 Camaro spring calculator. Although it's for a 69, it will get you close enough if you can determine (approximate) what options you car originally had. To be honest, I don't think there are that many versions of the rear springs available, and any set you get would probably be okay. However, your original question was to do with 4 or 5 leaf and if you can give me the spring code you come up with, I should be able to tell you if it was originally a 4 or 5 leaf setup.

Ed

Ed,

What exactly can I do with the information derived from this "spring calculator"?  Will it help me to find the correct springs by passing
this information to the spring manufacturer?  I have read a number of posts over the years from BB Camaro owners who claim that
the new installed springs have the incorrect ride height.  I always wondered why this was the case.  Is it more front than rear spring
related?  I'm going to be ready to install new springs shortly and I would like to get the proper springs the first time.   ???

Thanks,
Steve

Originality / Re: carb heat shields
« on: March 30, 2006, 10:31:15 PM »
The LJ-2 was going to use the same tri-power intake carbs and spacing as the 427 tri-power on the L-71; it's not clear that the shield was only for the LJ-2.

John,

Are you saying that the heat shield could have been an L-71 service item as well?  They already existed in 1969 as service items, didn't they?
My Vette knowledge is limited.

I replaced a rochester q-jet on my 68 ss 350 (L48) a few years ago. I forgot to put the heat shield on. Fuel percolation problem BIG TIME. Removed the carb, installed the heat shied and the problem was completely fixed. As far as being ugly goes, you can barely see it under the carb if you're using the correct one.

We're not talking about the same thing here.  The heat shield being discussed here was aluminum and quite large.  It was much wider and longer
than the carb base.  It covered a large portion of the intake runners.

General Discussion / Re: Vinyl or Not?
« on: March 30, 2006, 10:24:38 PM »
You know, this topic really got me to thinking about a 1969 Camaro "Day Two" or COPO car that I saw at the Camaro Nationals a few years ago.

I recall that it was green with a black vinyl top that was dealer installed.  It used the 1967-68 scheme where the vinyl went up to the drip rails.
When I first saw it, I did a double take.  Then I thought to myself - FAKE !  I believe I later learned that some dealers did vinyl top installations,
but not the the 1969 style.  Anybody know what car I am talking about?  It might have been a Yenko.

Build date of the car is 04C. It is a 720 trim tag car. Check out ebay item # 4623931565. I just bought it.

How awesome is that?  Even has an original add that depicts the same two cars.

Phillip,

I did a 68 Camaro vinyl top with my brother years ago.  No biggie.

I didn't do my '69 myself.  I started to do it, but I got scared that I might not get it just right.  I'm a perfectionist by nature and defer to others
when I'm not up to the challenge.  The areas of concern to me were around the window trim ( front & rear ) and how the vinyl top tucked
under it so as to eliminate peeling and the trim seating properly.

I did wet sand the top paint up to the area where the vinyl top chrome would be installed.  This promoted better adhesion of the glue.

BTW, as I didn't have the trim location anymore, so I had someone with a vinyl top car under restoration send me the measurements for each
rivet location on the quarters and the back ( below the rear window ).  Drilling that first hole was scarry. :o  Once I started drilling, it get easier
with every hole. ::)

All I can tell you is that early build HO Camaro's didn't have this option.
What's the build date of your car?
