I heard about that car that had the 396 in it about 15 years ago.Just wasn't sure if it was true or not.The Chevrolet dealer here in town supposedly sold 2 Black panthers back in the day. Both were small block cars.I tried to locate the car that was featured in the car magazine back in 1967 but had no luck. That car had a 427 in it and Corvette side pipes.

The cam is a flat tappet cam like original and the rockers are roller tip only. The block was not decked because they not want to loose the original block stampings on the pad.The engine is from a 1969 L78 Chevelle.Remember that in 1965,had the Corvette and full size Chevrolets had the L78 rated at 425HP.

Just got my new issue of Muscle Car Review and there is a tech article about a stock 396/375 HP rebuild putting out 425HP.The only deviation from stock is the use of roller tip rockers and pointless distributor. That was also using the stock manifolds. With headers and rejetting the carb(primary side only #68 to #72) it went up to 457HP.

Are they valve cover bolts? If so I have a complete set that I bought from Heartbeat City that I did not use. They have the RBW markings with no lines. It also comes with the valve cover holdowns. The part # is EGB-1938.

I took my manifolds to the machine shop. They had a big belt sander and had the mating surfaces sanded flat. When I installed them I used a light coating of Permatex Ultra Copper silicone on the mating surfaces with no gaskets. When the silicone dries you just peel away any excess that oozes out.I torqued the outside pairs at 15-20 ft/lbs with blue Loctite and the inside ones to 30-35ft/lbs and no Loctite.

My 396 is basically stock with a slightly lumpier cam.I am still running exhaust manifolds and a factory style  exhaust system

Would you use the same 72/76 jetting on a 396/375 as the 302?

The local Chevy dealership here in town sold 2 Black Panthers back in the day.I too have heard about the one car with the 396.He apparently takes it to cruise nights once on a awhile.I believe it originally came with a 327 and he put in the 396.The one from Sault Ste Marie was for sale in Hemmings a few months ago.He wanted $250000 for it.

Will running a thicker viscosity oil increase engine temperatures?
