Decoding/Numbers / Re: Caveat Emptor...another repro window sticker
« on: June 22, 2016, 11:16:00 AM »
I understand why some of you want a good, accurate reproduction WS to display with the car, but I confess I will never understand why you wouldn't accept having some text clearly visible on the front to the effect that it's repro. That would mislead nobody.
The suggestion that a watermark on the rear guarantees no-one could be mistaken in thinking it's real beyond the current owner, obviously discounts someone making a high-quality copy of the front of the document, conveniently resulting in a WS without said watermark.....
No disrespect intended, just my opinion as always.

Surely whether high quality or poor quality, 'restoration' window stickers would be a non-issue for misrepresentation if the watermark or statement as to their creation (such as 'this is a reproduction document') was on the front.

Bill I don't have access to my '69 AIM right now, but I was under the impression the capacitor was shown in UPC U63. Perhaps I'm thinking of the capacitor on the voltage reg?

I never realized it was a question.
I know that as the difference between 68 and 69 parts.
The 68 vs 69 console details? Good to know that is indeed a confirmed difference then, thanks Kurt!

This block isn't real, so .....
Kurt, I read and understood that, but my question was in response to Steve's comment thus:
There have been a few 388 (Tonawanda) cast blocks, assembled in Flint for Z28 application(DZ). Not sure why or how this happened.

Steve it looks as though the partial VIN sequence is 500270 but is it for a NOR or LOS car? Does the CRG have any evidence of Tonawanda blocks being machined and assembled at Flint early in the model year?

additionally, another small feature is checking the console itself.  Look for the cutout on the lower front half of the console, and check the lower console mounting bracket to see if the guage wiring harness bracket and plug socket are there.
An interesting point was raised on the console bases and wiring harness details in the AIM by Chick during his 68Z build thread over at Team Camaro. The theory is that no '68 consoles had a cutout in the front, nor a console bracket with the harness clip, but that in '69, all brackets had the harness connector clip, and a forward cutout. This is irrespective of the console having gauges or not.
Since that was raised as a possible theory, I have looked at every 68-69 console on eBay, CL and at swap meets, and have never seen a 68 console (off-white plastic, viewed from beneath) with a cutout, nor a 69 (black plastic) without a cutout.

Firewall penetration location for the oil line seems to vary between LOS and NOR, worth pointing out.

The various debates could rage on for ever. For example, I would prefer a NOM Z/28, L78, SS350 etc with 100% original sheet metal and all GM parts than a verified, documented, certified born-with drivetrain car that has been restored with a lot of reproduction parts on it. But that's just my choice, value of the car in each scenario is irrelevant.
Many armchair experts have been proven wrong or fooled over the decades, faking is nothing new but has improved a lot in recent years. I have no doubt some top-shelf 'verified' cars have a skeleton or two in the closet.

General Discussion / Re: Master Cylinder stamped SA

Thanks Kurt. So did the early-built cars get a 346 master stamped 'US'?

As you say, the proper way is to deal with the rust (it never sleeps) but if you need a temporary fix, for example to get through Summer cruising season, I'd pop the exterior mouldings off and find the problem area - often in the lower corners - then apply a bead of silicone sealant.

Bob from the wording in the CRG Chassis section brake article:
Quote
1967 and 1968 power disc brake cars used the 5460346 master cylinder. Early 1969 disc brake cars also used the 5460346 master cylinder (for about a month or so of production) with later 69 cars using the 5468309 casting.
I took that to mean that the early 69 cars also used the 'WT' stamped master until the switch to 309/US, but maybe that's not a correct interpretation?

That is a good theory, especially as it seems the JL8 cars were scheduled in batches.
