Decoding/Numbers / Strange Block Casting Number
« on: July 22, 2012, 02:24:59 PM »
Hi there

Finally assembled all the numbers of my engine today while taking pictures of everything. Something about the engine block casting got me puzzled. My car is a very early 1969 SS/RS 350 (engine build date on the pad stamp indicates Sept 25) and it has the block casting number 3927185 GM 5 T. According to an article on CRG a 1969 350ci block should start with 393 though  ???

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks,

Ed

Originality / To Cowl or not to Cowl
« on: July 18, 2012, 02:46:24 PM »
Hi everybody

As mentioned in my other post I recently acquired a nice numbers matching 1969 SS/RS 350 convertible. The car is an original export unit that was shipped end of 1968/beginning of 1969 to Switzerland where it was registered on March 1st 1969. Apart from a few details the car is in original condition. However thanks to Kurt and some other CRG members I found out that such an early production Camaro could not have been ordered with the Cowl Induction option.

While I love the "muscle car" looks of the hood I wonder if it would be better for it's resale value to get a 1969 SS Hood (a few are still offered on ebay). After all I "sold" the car to my wife as an  investment opportunity  ;D

Really appreciate your thoughts,

Ed

Originality / Importance of a Correctly Dated Carburetor
« on: July 18, 2012, 02:36:45 PM »
Dear all

I recently acquired a nice 1969 SS/RS 350 convertible that is numbers matching and has been left pretty unmolested over the years. However a few sins were committed probably in the 80's  ;) namely the dash had been cut during the installation of a radio (NOS replacement has been ordered) the hood had been replaced (see my other post) and the carburetor had been replaced.

The carburetor's serial number 17059216 identifies it as a (carter manufactured) correct Rochester Quadrajet for an auto trans 350ci engine BUT with a production date of 1979. Since I'm pretty new to the car collectors scene I'd like to get your feedback if I should try to replace the carb with a correctly dated unit?

Thanks for your feedback,

Ed

Restoration / What do you call this lever and where might one get it?
« on: June 10, 2012, 04:26:36 PM »
Hi everyone the following is probably more of a English course for me than anything else (sorry, I'm Swiss)  ;)

What is the English name for the lever depicted in the attached pic? I believe it is used for the ventilation system. I need to get the exact name so that I can start looking for the piece on US part sites  ;D

Thanks,

Ed

Decoding/Numbers / New Guy Needs Help Correlate Cowl/VIN with Options
« on: June 03, 2012, 09:05:53 AM »
Hello Everybody

Two weeks ago I joined the proud 1st Gen Camaro Owners Club  ;D

The car is at least from the looks a mostly unmolested numbers matching '69 SS/RS 350. VIN is 124679N521153 and I attached the Cowl Tag as JPEG.

According to the Cowl Tag it's supposed to be a 10C build so before the X codes were introduced, right? The build number and the straight headrests also point towards an October '68 fabrication. However there are a few options on the car that don't make any sense to me...  ???

1) The car came with the Radio Delete Option but Power Windows & Power Top. I read that the Radio Delete was chosen for performance oriented customers that wanted to save a few pounds when going to the track, but to me it doesn't make any sense to order radio delete but power windows (or a convertible altogether...). Also, the car has the opening for the rear mounted antenna which I believe also wasn't cut if ordered with radio delete. Any ideas how to find out if the radio delete was an original option?

2) The car also features the ZL2 Cowl Hood but according to your research the Cowl Hood was only available in December, right? So this must be an option that was installed later, perhaps together with the rally striping that also isn't original to the SS (though you see a lot of non-pace cars out there with rally stripes...)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thx,

Ed
