Title: Original 69 SS coupe and vert Jacking Instructions 3949515 sticker
Post by: 69pace on August 25, 2012, 12:47:54 AM
Hello
My original deck-lid Jacking Instructions Sticker on my Z-11 (part 3949515) is in rough shape.
Not really wanting to replace it, but want one in the book just in case I need one.

All the reproductions I have found for this part number all have the wrong date at the bottom - 10-1-66.
Anyone still have a original sticker and can take a good photo of the date?
The month and day are single digits, year looks like 68.
Here are two photos of mine.

Thanks in advance
Brian

Thanks Oak but I need a pic of part number 3949515 and will have the mystery part reference to a "retainer" between the wing nut, and jack base. This sticker was used on all SS with 14 inch Rally Wheels - coupe and Vert.

What part number is your sticker? 3949506?

Yes, and my SS did come with 14" Rally wheels. Chassis Broadcast Copy documents it.

I wonder if it is a LOS GMAD vs Chevrolet NOR thing. The part number you have according to the AIM is fro all other wheels besides PW7 & PW8 F70-14 tire options. Which option code does your broadcast sheet reference for the wheels?

Full listing of part numbers from the 1969 AIM here (listed in my post number 3): http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=210822

I looked at the AIM pages and found something. It must be a coupe or convertable thing. My car is a coupe, yours a convertable. Also the AIM page PW7 A1 is showing a convertable, not a coupe. The standard SS wheel was a 14 x 7 painted steel wheel and cover and F70-14 tires. 14" x 7" Rally wheels were option ZJ7 and stamped YJ. My broadcast copy has "YJ" in box #287 wheel size, my wheels are stamped YJ.
Page PW7 A1, must be for all convertables and SS convertables with larger F70-14 tires. Notice the jack base is right side up on your sticker 3949515 and page PW7. Standard tire convertables have the jack base upside down into the wheel and sticker 3949513. The coupes can fit the larger tires with no change, so only one sticker 3949506. Thats why you need the spacer, because the jack base is right side up and the wing nut needs a bigger contact point.

Brian,

And you thought your jacking instructions were in bad shape ? Check out mine (03C Z11, YJ wheels). I have to go uncover my X77 and see what the instructions look like (15" YH, original Endura car). Original jack is still with the car as well -

Regards,
Steve

it appears that the 3949515 pertains to the vert and not the coupe

Interesting stuff to be sure. Actual wheel style seems to not be the determining issue.
According to the AIM 3949515 was for both coupe and vert as there is no distinction as on the other instructions.
But that said the drawing is of a vert jack orientation is it not?
The AIM page goes on to list Pw6 & PW7 tire options, if I read that right on the RPO listing its F70-14-4 red or white stripe tires, but the Z11 pace cars this sticker is on came with RWL tires. :)  To add to the confusion the AIM page is titled "AUTO JACK BASE RETAINER" which is part number 3929976 and I have never seen one, and what would the red stripe or the white stripe (a.k.a. whitewall) have to do with it?

In any event as to the hows and whys the 3949515 sticker ended up on pace cars is not the matter at hand, but the fact that there is no correct date, font, or material jacking instructions reproduction sticker on the market. So I guess I have to have one created myself. The date looks like 3-6-68

If you look at the standard (blackwall) tire & jack sheet (UPC 10, sheet A2), the coupe used #3949506 sticker, and the convertible used #3949513, and the spare wheel was installed with the outer face DOWN, and the jack base was installed with the top side DOWN. This sheet is for the standard equipment condition, which was blackwall tires.

If you look at the PW7/PW8 whitewall/redline/RWL tire & jack sheet (RPO PW7/PW8, sheet A1), the "model" block states "12300-467", which specifies the convertible body style, and that's what's shown in the illustration, using sticker #3949515. The illustration shows the spare wheel installed with the outer face (and the whitewall or redline or raised white letters) UP, using the added retainer #3929976, and the jack base was installed with the top side UP.

For the "SS", look at RPO L-48, non-illustrated parts list (sheet A2); under UPC 10, it says the spare wheel assembles the same as RPO L-35. If you go to RPO L-35, non-illustrated parts list (sheet A3), under UPC 10, it says the spare wheel assembles the same as RPO PW7, which specifies sticker #3949515.

John
From what you posted above,
AIM UPC PW7/PW8 only specifies convertible (12000-467)
therefore the coupe reverts back to AIM UPC 10

is this a correct assumption?

Thanks John, so I guess I'm never going to find a decent example of one left in the wild to copy.

That's what logic would dictate, but it ignores the Z/28 condition (non-SS coupe with RWL tires); I guess they just forgot about that one.
