Title: rear end noise from my 69 z
Post by: william1 on August 19, 2012, 08:51:55 PM
almost made it to the dream cruise, just short of Woodward ave started to get a bad clunk from the rear on left turn accelerations, we limped it home and just put it away, when i get some time will start to give it a good look, sounds like its coming from inside and not just the axle sliding around, any idea's before we rip/tear, thanks

It almost sound like the clutch packs are too tight. That's if you have posi of course....Joe

the noise is most likely the positraction clutch packs; Possibly you might need some 'whale oil' posi additive...  ?    :)
(Not sure the original stuff is available any longer.....?)..

I have a similar issue with my 67 12 bolt posi after a local (Michigan - East Side) shop set did a service on it. Clutch pack preload is too tight and it chirps on turns.

Can anyone recommend a good-reliable 12 bolt posi mechanic around the Novi, MI area? I do not want to drive the car 40 miles across town for a repair - also, do not want to leave it overnight somewhere (I used to work in a shop - too many horrible stories with classic cars getting damaged).  Yep, lots of constraints, maybe someone has a recommendation??

Thanks!

OK here's the update, after draining and removing back cover, pulled shafts, and carrier out and on  the bench, other than side gear movement that i thought was to much, i decided to tear it apart, after getting retainer plates out without shooting them all over the place, started on the side gears, and bingo, one whole side gear washer gone to the point of it working into the case, clutch packs were full of very fine metal, new Eaton on the way. pinion and gear look good, axle bearing and seal kit should finish it up.

Other than the washer just not there it looks good, i ve had this one for 7 years now and changed lubes but didn't see any significant metal when it was drained, and didn't see any this time so it was this way for some time i guess, the side gear wore into the case with some visible damage to the surface's as well as the side gear, but it is just as shiny as the other side, so I'm not sure any pics would show it that well but you can feel it, ill try to get some taken and post.

lucked out and got a good pattern after shim setup on new Eaton unit, but one of my friends asks, what are going to do with the old one ? does anyone know of or even heard of a repair for this issue, i understand that it might exceed the price of a new complete case but i just hate throwing the old stuff away. Thanks
