Title: 12 bolt rear end help
Post by: jrs69 on August 18, 2012, 10:34:42 PM
I restoring a 69 RS car back to a semi-pro touring set up and am torn on where to go with my rear end.  I currently have a Heidts front clip w/ tubular control arms, disc brakes, etc... Anyway I WAS going to purchase a complete 4link posi set up for the rear of the car but am now having second thoughts and may just go back with the original 12 bolt multi leaf and disc brakes.

Here are my questions:

1. Does anyone have a good reliable source for a period correct 12 bolt?
2. Can I use a 12 bolt out of a 70-73 camaro or any other GM cars without having to butcher the axle housing?
3. Am I wasting my time and since I've already givin up the originality of the suspension just go with the 4 link?

Only '70s still used a 12 bolt and it is not a bolt-in to a 1st Gen.

Having bought/sold/fixed enough 12 bolt axles in my day I wouldn't bother today. Most have seen hard use, may be rusty, cracked, bent. Popular ratios [3.55, 3.73, 4.10] correctly dated & coded get big bucks from the restoration crowd.

For around $3200 you can buy a NEW Moser 12 bolt with discs; bolt it in. You could easily spend that or more on a tired OE axle.

Good advise on the OEM, now I just need to decide between the mosier multileaf set up or the Heidts 4 link, either one is approx $4K
