Although the Daytona 24-hour race was not on the official Trans-Am schedule for 1969, like it had been previously,
I decided to include it here because of the nice 1-2-3 finish for GM powered cars and the nice third place overall,
1st-in-class result for the Jerry Titus/Jon Ward Firebird. (Jon Mello Collection)

The photo of John Ward changing the rear axle at Daytona is a great shot. it is hard to make out, but the car has the chassis mounted watt linkage with the pyramid towers on the axle tubes. It is a Pontiac rear axle, not the Chev part, that the one time Camaro was originally built with. You can also see the double adjustable Koni shocks.

I figured you would enjoy that Firebird photo, Bruce. Some good details there and not your typical on-track shot.

Here's more coverage of the Daytona 24-hour as found in Road & Track magazine, courtesy of Mike K (Swede70).

The Titus/Ward "Firebird" is actually a '67 Camaro which got turned into a Firebird in late '68.

huge following in this country in this day and age but winning this race was a big deal back in the day.

The Citrus 250 at Daytona was the debut of the Boss 302 in competition and also the start of the
Nascar Grand Touring (GT) series, which was Nascar's version of Trans-Am. Don Yenko won the
race in his ex-Smokey Yunick Camaro but there was also another ex-Smokey Yunick Camaro in the
race driven by Lloyd Ruby, car #25, and entered by Gene White Firestone. (Jon Mello Collection)

Owner Larry Drover's '68 Camaro as prepped back in Indiana prior to the Citrus 250. Obviously,
they had hoped to use the number 15, but the presence of Parnelli Jones in the Bud Moore

1969 was the last year of the "Le Mans start" at Sebring where the drivers were not actually in the car to start the race. They had to run to the
car after the starter's pistol fired and then hopefully start the engine with no problems. Though they were supposed to belt themselves in before
taking off, it is well known that some drivers slipped into their belts after getting underway.

Right after the Sebring race, the Penske Lola and the transporter carrying it were stolen and both were stripped.
Roger, Mark and some of the other crew members had flown home but according to Donohue's book, The Unfair
Advantage
, Bill "Murph" Mayberry and Peter Reinhart stayed behind for an extra day so that Mayberry could meet
up with some friends of his at the Paleface Bar in Daytona on the way back. While they were at the bar is when
everything got stolen. The stripping of the car did not allow enough time for them to enter Le Mans with it, as had
been their plan. I'm not certain but I think this may have been "Murph" Mayberry's last job working for Penske.

The above ad shows Jon Ward as the seller of the Firebird but Chris Economaki's article
below indicates that the car was owned by Terry Godsall just prior to Sebring.

Thanks for that little tidbit, John.   I knew the team Javelins started last, since they didn't arrive in time for qualifying.  However, there must have been something good going on for them to get up into third and fourth!  It may very well tell more of the story of Kaplan, the Javelins, and the reported 480 hp......MIS is a horsepower track!  :^)

An unexpected and very detailed thread on the topic took form on the BOSS 302 Registry Trans Am board regarding the '69 RKE engine development program that contains much that is special.  See:

Bridgehampton Trans-Am coverage from my 7-12-69 issue of Competition Press & Autoweek.
Mark Donohue started from the back of the pack in Bucknum's #9 car and finished in second.
Notice the first two rows are the factory Boss 302s. Very impressive performance by Mark.

Here is some coverage of the Donnybrooke Trans-Am race as found in National Speed Sport News. (Jon Mello Collection)

This snippet from Chris Economaki's column shows that Penske was really feeling the pressure to win the
'69 series. Not only from his own personal desire but I'm sure Chevrolet was applying some heat as well.

Robert, keep us posted on what you find out from Al Richards.

Below is a photo of the Gagnon Spring Firebird during a Wednesday practice session for the St Jovite
Trans-Am race. This is the last known photo of the car before Jerry Titus took it out for a test run and
crashed it. There are conflicting stories about whether this car was rebuilt later or scrapped and several
of us here are working "behind the scenes" to see if we can come to a definitive conclusion. There are
a bunch of stories of cars that got wrecked in Trans-Am and were they rebuilt or were they replaced.
It's part of the "fun" of researching the old Trans-Am series. Lots of mystery and intrigue for those who
care to delve deeper into the subject.

Dick Brown Collection

Here are some Montreal Gazette newspaper articles (courtesy of Chad Raynal) which discuss the
midweek (pre-race) crash of Dick Brown's Firebird by Jerry Titus. The Firebird was replaced with
a '69 T/G Firebird and we're not sure of the details behind who paid what for the car. This
new '69-style car was orange rather than the previous yellow/green and research is pointing
toward this orange car being the car used by Guillermo "Bill" Ortega at the Wolverine Trans-Am
earlier in the season.

It shows Donohue's car after rolling off the scales, which is part of the tech inspection of each car prior to the race.
Many thanks to Mike for sharing this with us from his personal collection.

including the news that Walt Hane was leaving his duty as the SCCA's chief tech inspector
to join the Titus-Godsall Firebird team as an administrative/technical head.

Javelin returned to a two-car effort at Laguna Seca with Ron Grable staying in the #4 which he had driven at Watkins Glen.
Jerry Grant was brought in to replace John Martin but was put in Grable's old #3 car (which had been wrecked at St. Jovite).

The September 3rd, 1969 issue of National Speed Sport News featured an ad for the Larry Bock/LarryDrover 1968 Camaro
which was severely damaged at Donnybrooke two months earlier. Not surprisingly, no mention is made that the car had
been wrecked and repaired. Bock drove a Dodge Dart in the Nascar GT series while Drover made the repairs. They replaced
the '68 Camaro with a '69 model for the 1970 Trans-Am season.

The September 6th, 1969 issue of Competition Press & Autoweek featured an ad for the Firebird (ex-Penske Camaro) that
Jerry Titus wrecked at St Jovite a month earlier on August 1st. This was the Gagnon Spring sponsored car driven by Dick
Brown for Robert Gagnon. For some reason Dick Brown is the contact person in the ad even though it's Gagnon's car.
This is another case where no mention is made about an accident repair but the car has "new paint" as well as a new
engine and transmission since the previous engine and trans got swapped into the new '69 bodied replacement car.

very cool pic of james garner with the sunoco camaro at sears point from the program for that event. this is mentioned in the donohue technical excellence at speed book on page 169. I wonder if garner actually drove the car ?

I agree that it's neat seeing James Garner with the Sunoco Camaro. The "Technical Excellence at Speed" book does not definitively state whether he did or did not drive the car. Based on how it is written in the program, it appears that he did. Garner was at Sears Point filming scenes for his racing movie called "The Racing Scene" which was incorrectly identified as "In The Scene" in Michael Argetsinger's book. The movie was an attempt to document the exploits of Garner's A.I.R. racing team and did not end up getting released. I do feel fortunate to have seen a screening of the movie at the first Riverside Raceway Museum event two or three years ago.

How is the Sears Point track layout different to-day compared to the T/A race in 69?  I'm trying to compare the lap times of the HTA gang that ran at the Festival this year.

Hello Robert,

Though Sears Point has been changed much less than so many others, including Laguna Seca... It's still been altered a bit.  Most of the changes have come in the last 20 years, where the drag strip is no longer used between turns 11 and 2, and the overall approach and shape of turn 7.  Turn 7 has a couple different configs that can be run today, even when you're not running the NASCAR short shoot.

There are probably more changes that someone more familiar with the track could explain, but those that I note can be seen in red below.

Robert, the track doesn't look like it has changed too much from the original layout. I'd have to think the time would be pretty comparable between 1969 and now.

Robert,
Having run Sears Point in regional races in the 80's, before they modified it, (mostly due to Nascar) I can tell you that they straightened out the es turns between 7 and 8, 8A  They also narrowed the front straight quite a bit.  We used to share a large portion of the Dragstrip there and now it is a completely separate entity. Turn 4 used to be a blind corner (the hill was in the way) but they moved all the dirt away so you can see around it now. Lap times were very similar but both tires and suspensions have improved a bunch since then so it's kinda like comparing apples to oranges.  I was looking at the times as well Robert and I can tell you I had the lap record for ITA (for a while anyway) at 1:59. Mazda RX3 with suspension mods, Yokohama A008's, no engine mods.  So these guys were hauling butt back in 69'.

Mike, thanks for your input and for straightening me out on my incorrect assumption. I also got the following input from Gary Goeringer who drives the ex-Bill Maier '68 Mustang in the Historic Trans-Am Group.

"The track has changed quite a bit since it first opened.  Just a few of the changes:  The front straight has been narrowed and realigned to prevent crossing over the drag strip, T1 also had to be modestly realigned to accommodate the changes in the straight.  The camber of T5 was changed significantly when the NASCAR extension was installed....... and (IMHO) the biggest change was to the configuration of T7--there is now two used configurations of various lengths and corresponding apexes, exit widths--it makes a big difference for me.

Parnelli's pole time in '69 of a 1:45 is clearly 'flying'.   I'm not sure Epsman's ex-Follmer Javelin with Kenny on board (the fastest driver/car combo in the group) could come close.   To put it in real world terms, and this isn't a comparison to PJ, I can turn 1:54s pretty much all day.  On a 'flyer', I have been to the high 1:51 range once or twice, but generally, in the 1:52s.   Kenny's is generally about 2-3 seconds faster--that would put him in the 1:48-1:49 range.   And remember, our tires are WAY BETTER (and way smaller) than what was on the cars in '69.  Bill Maier's best times (that I have seen), were mostly in the 1:58-2:00 range--with slicks!!!"

Mark Donohue ahead of Roy Woods. This is early in the race since there is no damage to the front end of Donohue's car.

Was Riverside early in the year? I ask that because Parnelli's car did not use that flapper fuel filler for long. Most pictures show the big aluminum lid with the knob on it. It also appears to be missing the two chrome marker bezels that they used as fuel tank vents above the stock gas cap location. The white part of the roof is very wide on this car too. Also has a chrome bumper, some were black but I think they put steel ones on the rear to balance out the weight. There is actually a factory light weight steel front bumper for sale on ebay right now.

I see Riverside was the last race, maybe this was the newest fuel filler version.

The Mustangs used several different fuel filler styles during '69 but I think this downward flapper style was just used at Riverside for the last race of the season. Of course, in 1970 the SCCA outlawed these kind of gas fillers so this looks like a one-shot deal in the case of the Mustangs . Notice that Peter Revson's #1 Mustang also has the flapper style fuel filler (in the picture I posted in reply #125).

Even before the '69 Trans-Am season ended, Penske was in negotiations with AMC to drive Javelins
for the 1970 season. It certainly made sense from a financial standpoint since Chevrolet could only
offer technical assistance with no money to back it up. This report from National Speed Sport News
shows the Penske to AMC deal was completed two weeks after the last race at Riverside. The deal
for Dan Gurney to drive for Plymouth happened equally fast.

Mike, I have never seen a photo of John Cannon driving the Bud Moore #16 car at Lime Rock. I have wanted to,
since it was a one-off drive for him, but so far no luck finding a picture.

Here are a few news items from the 12-24-69 issue of NSSN. (Jon Mello Collection)
David Pearson is choosing not to defend his 1969 Nascar championship by running only part of the schedule for
the 1970 season. He was hoping to be Parnelli's teammate in Trans-Am but apparently Ford didn't want to pay
up the $$$ so that could happen.

Really having a ball reading and looking at all the memorabilia. Never ever had an opportunity to go to anything like this type racing and can't even remember if it was ever televised, it must have been a ball. Question, were all the Camaros true Z28's or just Camaro's in general?
Title: Re: 1969 Trans-Am season review

I'm glad you are enjoying this stuff. That's a big part of why it's being posted.

Many of the cars were true Z/28s and some were just Camaros or bodies-in-white that were upgraded/modified. Just as a guess, it might be about a 50-50 mix over the course of the '67-'72 timeframe.

Good stuff Jon this thread sure brings back a lot off great memories, in regards to the St. Jovite race Dick Hofman did not compete at the 69 race although I do remember crewing for him there in the later in seventies............ That weekend I was hanging out with the Rusty Jowett crew and I think they had a strong top 5 finish. My other memory from that weekend was watching Carol Shelby go into meltdown after the big crash wiped out both his cars that incident eventually cost Ford the championship.
Attached to this post is an image of Dicks car at the Mosport race in 72 and another shot from the paddock at the 69 Riverside  ........ Footnote the gentleman on the left was a engineer from Ford keeping eye on his expensive camera equipment we were carrying for the race.

Thanks for the pictures.  Al, it doesn't look like your '72 Mosport photo attached itself. In your Riverside photo, what's the guy with the white hat and glasses holding?

The huge accident at the St. Jovite race certainly proved detrimental to Ford.  Penske got his opportunity to take charge of the series and he seized it.

Sorry Jon,
I must have exceeded my band width allotment, or perhaps the content was too risque for this conservative site. Yes I think we were having a little post qualifying celebration with the Ford boys, they had been trying to get race footage all summer but the independent  Mustangs they were using failed to make the show.
Dick did an amazing job putting our car 12th in an extremely tough field, and we were in shape for a very strong finish but a myriad of problems changing the film in the antique 35 mm cameras during pit stops killed our day........... Originally changing film was not part of our agreement with Ford but they were so desperate for race footage I gave in and let them go ahead and make the change. As you know the race was a classic Ford Chevy duel but sadly for Ford things it did not end well .........
After the race my friend Marc, Rusty Jowetts crew chief came by and tried to sell me their whole operation for $5000. sadly due to lack of funds I had to pass.......... As you probably know the Jowett team worked closely with Penske and while they were on the West Coast Roger arranged to have their engines tested on Traco's dyno and not surprisingly they came very close to the Traco numbers.

Al, Miss Toronto is sure a lot cuter than Dick Hoffman.

That was a heck of a deal for the Jowett car at $5000 back then. It's too bad you couldn't make it happen.

72 at Mosport would be the Mo Carter Charity unnoficial T/A race, so is that the 1st Hoffman camaro, which
Roy purchased and restored, and later passed thru my hands, or is that the 2nd Hoffman camaro?

Hi Bob,
After 40 years I am not certain but I do believe that it is the second Camaro, you know the one you wish you still owned.......Anyway we both know somebody on this site that will let us know.
Dicks cars were always well engineered but their pre race service sucked, I remember one year at Brainerd the boys back at the shop sent he car out with no oil in the dif and we fried the year end on the first lap of practice.

just rereading this thread, what a great year !

question for Jon or any one else on this site, does some one  have the program for the Bridgehampton race in 1969 ? or any other paperwork from this race ? A '69 Shelby GT 500 Mustang convertible was used as a press car. is there any mention in the program of which dealer this car was courtesy of ? those other guys (being a Shelby forum) are trying to find out.

thanks Mike (group/7)
