Title: 1968 Camaro Window Crank Knob Color
Post by: Lane 68 on July 19, 2012, 07:36:32 AM
I have Black/White Houndstooth Deluxe interior in my 68 RS/SS Coupe.
Black dash / door panels / Woodgrain center dash panel with the 'deluxe' trim.
The window crank knobs are "clear".
Was this a correct option or should they be "black"?
Thank You!!....Lane 68

Are cranks same size front and rear for Deluxe Interior for 1968?
What is part number?
Unable to find in search! :-\

Thank You,

Ed,
Thank you....it seems some repop shops offer TWO different sizes for front and rear.....confusing at times.

Yeah, it seems the repop houses always get things wrong.

But, I did a little detective work and found that the original part number (7752485) was superseded by part number 1732326 in 1972, which was superseded again in the 1980's by part number 20348200. And guess what, 20348200 is still available at your local GM dealer!!!

Now, remember, superseded parts may not be "exactly" like the originals. Especially one that's been superseded a few times. Usually by this time they're just a handle that will "fit"! But you might want to check it out anyway. Also remember that "service" parts may not be "exactly" like "production" parts. The service department had the responsibility of finding something that would fit. They didn't care if it was exactly like what originally came on the car.

However, that being said, I did a search on ebay and found two sellers with the 1732326 parts and several with the 20348200 parts. I also checked GM Parts Direct (http://www.gmpartsdirect.com) and they have the 20348200 in stock, but they're NOT cheap!! You might want to check your local parts department and see what they want for them.

The knobs on the current GM handles are not correct for the 68's. They do not have the correct "ribs" on the outer edges (area you grip).................RatPack....................

What are the differences in the "ribs" ?
Currently restoring 68.
Thanks!

Lane, here are comparisons of the 68 knob vs the 69-up knob. Besides the number of "ribs" on the knob the OD became smaller at roughly 1-5/16" from the 1968 diameter of 1-11/32". I checked to see if I had any NOS window cranks laying around to compare to the 69-up one I have, but no luck.....RatPack.......................

Great info here! Was looking at a 07D 68 Survivor today and the window crank knobs were the 69 style as pictured previoiusly. Assume since it is a late car the change was already made. Any thoughts on exactly when the change took place?

While doing some research for Lane earlier today, it occurred to me that 69's never used anything but clear knobs on two different handles: 9715291 on the front, and 9717838 for rear. The "291" handle was used in 68 front and rear, deluxe or std interior, with interior color keyed knobs. So that 1969 handle I used for a comparison may possibly be a service replacement as it was the only black knob one I had on the 291 handle. I have a lot of original clear knobs on the 291 handle and I didn't use them for comparison because the ribs didn't show up in the pictures. Here is a picture showing the backs of the handles with the same cast number, but definitely different in the cavity of the handle area.

Chick, I will try to keep an open mind about this as I could only see it being possible in a black interior car only, otherwise that car has had them changed sometime in the past. I would like to see the cast numbers from the backs of each handle.......................RatPack................

Rat Pack...
Did the "291" handle in 68', have the "deep curve" or the "shallow curve" in the arm...to your knowledge.
I have a 10B Camaro RS/SS with Deluxe Black Interior I want to put the correct cranks in.
Thanks again !

Shallow curve. The deep curve one didn't show up until 1969 on the rear panels only and it was the 9717838 cast handle. If I get time tomorrow I will dig some out for comparison, if not, then it will be Monday.......................RatPack................

Troy, the car is a local 2 owner car with black standard interior. Guess I might be able to check the cast #'s with a mirror!

Chick, more than likely they will have the "291" handles. I would still like to see other 68's that are unrestored before saying they got the later style knob. As this would be the very first 68 with this style knob..............RatPack.............

I dug through all of my handles and found that the backs of the handles were no way to identify whether they were service replacements or not as the recessed cavity was different on just about all of them in some way or another. Here are some pictures showing differences in the 68-69 #9715291 (frt & rr 68, frt 69)handle, and the #9717838 rear handle for 1969 Camaros. There is one picture showing the original handles along with a repro handle that either came from the "HELP" rack at the parts store, not really sure where it came from, just marked CP on the rear. I did not get measurements showing the amount of offset for each as I am pressed for time today. I will be back on here Monday, earlier if I find the time............RatPack......................

Will try and get back over to the 68 survivor asap.
Here are some pics of a 68 291, 69 291, and late 80's/early 90's service replacement.

Chick, that 20322800 handle was used on 83-88 G-body cars, and numerous other GM cars during the early 80's to late 90's. Wonder if that is the one that was a supercede for the correct handles. I cannot see it working in a Camaro due to the curvature of the handle..........RatPack...............

Rat Pack...
My understanding is the "800" handle has been superceded twice and is still avaliable from GM .
It has the run"deep curve" in it.

Chick / Rat Pack..
See Ed Bertrand's post previously in this topic.  I believe that is the superceded deep curve crank you speak of.
part number 20348200.
Hope this helps.

Guys I verified that the 20348200 handle shown is still the same one available through GM and all of the aftermarket vendors. It is not correct for any 67-69 Camaro, and it may hit the molding on the rear panels, will have to check fitment first............RatPack............

All the color keyed handles were discontinued by GM in the early 80's and replaced by the black knob handle. As far as I know, no one is reproducing them in colors other than clear and black so your best bet is used.
