Title: Speedo cable Clips
Post by: 68camaroz28 on July 10, 2012, 03:18:15 AM
Both the 68 & 69 AIM call out 3 speedo clips. 68 AIM UPC M20 A6
Both the 68 & 69 AIM under UPC 0, A8.5 & A9 respectively, call out two holes to be drilled.
Our 68 did not have 3 speedo clips and two other 69's I'm aware of only have two.
Just wondering if two clips is a common sight among NOR Camaro's.
The other thing found today on a NOR May built Z/28 was a difference in the two clips.
We took the one out near the front of the trans tunnel and it is a totally different design
from the one on the cowl even though the AIM calls out 377324 for all three.
I know of one 68 that only had one clip! What do you have on your 4-speed cars?
Here are the two clips!

To me, they look like they are the same clip except the lower one pictured looks like someone has folded it over backwards and made a real meal out of it..

I have a 10A '68 built Norwood 69 Camaro that does not have the speedo clips on the underside of the floor and I have looked pretty hard for evidence. Original Muncie car.

Steve, the repro clips are not correct so original Muncie 4-speed clips can be somewhat of a challenge to find. The clip in question we took out and it was folded differently and sure seemed like a different type clip with the same type fastener (that goes in hole). We have no reason to believe this clip was removed, reworked and put back in. The fold for holding the cable is opposite.

My 69 Z28 (Norwood car) only has two speedo clips. The one on the firewall and the one nearest the tranny. There is a dimple in the lower firewall/tunnel area where the other speedo clip hole should have been drilled but wasn't.

It may never have been removed, but looking at just those two pictures, there appears to be signs of folds and creases on it that are remarkably similar to the first "normal" clip shown.
There is no doubt, going by it's poor condition and contour, that someone at some time has had a go at it.. I have never seen speedo clips bent backwards like that and I wonder why would GM have made two different styles of clip to do the same job in roughly the same place on the same car?
I could be wrong. :)

Could be correct Steve but the reason for me asking question similar to how many clips does one's car have. AIM calls out three but is that the norm? How many clips do you have?

So Mark your 68 only has (one) the cowl clip?

Thanks montgomg! Intersting for sure.....

My 11C 68 NOR M21 has 3 clips.  Two originals were still in the car: tunnel/rear and pass. side lower firewall (smashed!).

I just checked and found my 67 NOR 05B w/4 speed Muncie has only 2 holes drilled with 2 clips. One at the firewall (like your picture) and the other near the tranny.

Chick,

My 04D Z28, NOR, Has the one at the front of the trans and the one back further into the tunnel. The one at the front is just back from were the firewall and tunnel meet, pass side for both.

Hi Chick....two, one on firewall/tunnel and the other in front of the crossmember in tunnel, both on passenger side.  No clips around the firewall hole.  Check signature for vehicle.

Show-off.

On a more serious note, I would really really like to buy one fo the original clips if someone can part with one.

Yea, and I need one also!

Well for sure so far it has been a mixed bag from 1 to three. I have only looked at 5 cars recently of which one had one clip and the others all had two. The clip hole (assume where the dimple was) in the tunnel seems to lie around 2.5" back from where the lip of the firewall goes underneath and overlaps the floor.
After more review I agree with Steve that what I first thought might be a different clip in the tunnel was just the same clip totally bent around (changed config.). Wish I had known of this while at Frederick and Carlisle. :)

Any chance these clips are installed some other GM cars also? Something more likely to be seen in a junk yard like a Nova or something? I got a few repros from HBC recently and they're nice, but they don't look like the originals.

When I first started this thread I thought maybe there was a different muncie speedo cable clip used in the tunnel area as my friends 69Z had the one pictured at the beginning of this thread but as pointed out maybe it was just all twisted about. Our 68Z was taken off the road (taken apart) in 1979 prior to our purchase 30 years ago so much of the hardware/clips/etc. was taken off by the previous owner. A few things he bagged but most hardware was put in multiple cigar boxes. Previously I had only found one muncie speedo clip and was asking for another but today I found another clip just like the one that was on the 69Z in the tunnel area holding the speedo cable. Now I'm really thinking there was more than one type used.......
Has anyone else seen these clips? This clip was full of grease/debris that one would assume from the underside of the car.

Look at the form in the steel! You do not bend one around 180 degrees and keep that form along with the two outward indents. When formed the indents wouild be to the outside and not inside as it would have been if bent around.

You can see where it was "un-bent" from its original configuration; there was only one clip, used at all locations.

I compared your clip to a original spare clip I have and I could easily bend my clip to same configuration as yours shown in the photos.

Compared the clip to one of my originals and you Copo are 100% correct. Should have done that to begin with so bad on me. It is somewhat interesting that two different cars had similar bent clips but the bottom line is they are the same.
Thanks for checking!

My 3D LOS car was blessed with three. One was bent over...the "factory" undercoating seemed to preserve the two lower ones.

I look at wrecking yards for them as well, as one of mine is in rough shape...and I remember Lynn looking for some a while back.
Unfortunately I have never seen one on another car...

Bring this topic up again in the near future.  I have a wrecking yard in Vancouver WA that has about 14 wreaked 1st gens.  Most have been stripped to nothing, but I could check for the clips in the future.

I ended up modifying the crappy $9 each repros... Not exactly correct, however given the starting point pretty good.

I used a vice and bent the front tab to a right angle I made a die and and anvil out of a grade 8 bolt and piece of pipe and then used my vice as a press to reform the clip, next I ground it to the correct width, then I used a round file to file the round cutouts and finally filed the edges to clean it up.
I probably have $50 in labor in each one.

I drew out a quick oblique of the clip with dimensions.

I found a guy at Carlisle who has a ton of parts from parting them out over the years and he found one for me. Look for the old type guy who parted them out years ago. Not an easy part to find.....but I only needed one also.....
Glass beaded mine and had them clear zinc coated.
