Title: ss 350 4spd options
Post by: mossyoak1964 on April 15, 2012, 12:51:09 AM
I am new to this site and have some q's about 4spd options for the 1967 ss 350. My car is all number matching with protect-o-plate. The Rear end code that matches the protect-o-plate is PL0919G
PL=4-speed close ratio 3.55:1 rear gear. I thought the close ratio Muncies where installed in z's and big blocks? This car is a L48 295hp 350 Cal. built with speed warning indicator and heater delete. Has anyone documented a m-21 in a SS-350? Thanks

PL has nothing to do with the transmission. That is the rear axle code only. What does your cowl tag show for the transmission code?

Daniel is correct. PL is only used to identify the axle type. In your case a 3.55:1, 12 bolt, Non Posi. Built Sept. 19, 1st Shift".

"I thought the close ratio Muncies where installed in z's and big blocks"?
That's correct. The M21 was for Z28's, L34's & L78's.
Can you post pics of the POP, the cowl, the Vin #, and the engine pad? If you have trouble posting pics send them to my email address & I'll try to post them for you.

BTW...welcome!

The Protect-O-Plate has P7R04 listed for the transmission. I will try to take some pics of the POP and post. I got the information regarding the PL being a M-21 from chevrolet by the numbers. All numbers that I have followed up with have checked out. The RPM change between gears when I drive indicates close ratio. Thanks

No idea why CBTN's has that 'close ratio' note for that axle. It's incorrect.

You car has traveled some in the past few years - CA, KY, OH, MO.

Engine & Tran  ??? ??? ???  Sure hope I'm wrong! Need a pic of the engine pad to make sure. Maybe it's in the data base. But the number you gave doesn't match. And of course, neither does the M21.
Thanks for posting the pics!

Marty,
I sent you a pic. of the engine pad. These #'s seem to match the POP, but I realize that people have been building frauds and claiming #'s match for years. I have verified all the numbers on the car and they match the POP to Vin #. Hopefully its the real deal. Thanks

The only thing that I have decoded differant is under the Option 2 L=M20/M21 4spd. This car currently doesnt have fold down back seat.

Is there any way other than pulling the cover on the trans. to determine if this is a M20 or M21? Everything I see has not indicated that this is not a M21.

Follow the RPO on the left hand column until you see M21 and check the requirements (off to the right). There is no way a M21 would have come from the factory in a L48. If it did it would show up here; http://www.camaros.org/pdf/options.pdf

Do you have any numbers off the side of the trans? This should tell us exactly what you have. You can find the "Maincase Casting Numbers" here; http://www.camaros.org/trans.shtml#4speed

Yes - If the rpm drop from 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 shifts is pretty much the same, it's an M21; if the rpm drop at 3-4 is significantly more than from 1-2 or 2-3, it's an M20.

Could it be a M20 case with M21 guts or aftermarket gear set? Not up on Muncies as far as what will interchange, I know you cant mix and watch but could you change all the innards?

Kevin- Here's your POP (could not find RPO U15- Speed Warning Device). I don't think I have ever seen a closer car and engine build date; Car-10D, Engine-10/25.

Your "Guards, door-edge" is RPO B93

I always thought 4P was the code for SS350 not just a radius rod. L30/M20 also got the 4P but we know in this case it's not an L30 car so the 4P code would indicate SS350.

Marty just made a typo.  It should be a R instead of a B for the carburetor code as Kevin has noted in reply #5 above.  R would make it a Quadra-Jet.

3870357 is the final assembly part number for the M20 transmission used on the 1967 L48 and L35 engines.

C48 is indicated as position e, number 4 in the POP DECODE SECTION (http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#POPOptionCodes). Your POP shows position c and f (both number 4), so you have U63/U80 (Am radio with rear speaker) and B93 (door edge guards).

Your car's too early for the radius rod. More info HERE (http://www.camaros.org/radiusrod.shtml).

That's not C96 but G96. Non-standard would be something changed from the default part that was used. I don't know what the default ratio would have been but it wasn't 3.55. All cars built have default part that is used to build it. Default meaning just ordinary run of the mill cars. If something was changed it would get a different code on the build sheet so the plant workers would know what to install.

Kevin- Get the number off of your axle then go to this link & look at the listing under "Rear Axle Codes". The first two letters are the key; http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml#AxleCodes. It will tell you exactly what you have. Here is a pic of mine to use as reference;

Your POP says it's "PL" which is 3.55. So you are probably correct. Just verify it with what's on your car.
