I got Jerry's book several weeks ago and an AIM. I am also look to purchase some shop manauls. I was reading in the tech sections on ignition systems and realized I need the factory spec settings. I am looking to buy either a chassis service manual, chassis overhaul manual, or both. Anyone have either of these books and have recommendations. I know the sevice manual is advertised as 700 pages so with that much information, I am not sure if buying both at the same time is redundant or not?

Get both of them. The Service Manual covers most of what you need, and the Overhaul Manual covers complete teardown/rebuild of major components. Even if you don't use the Overhaul Manual that much, it's a terrific learning aid for how everything works. If you have to take your car somewhere to be worked on, do you really think they'll have the correct technical references for a 43-year-old car?

I have both, but 68 and I wish I had them when I was working on my first Camaro. I t would have made a steeper learning curve. In fact, it would have saved me from breaking a wire on my 837 alternator if I would have looked at my OM before taking it apart.

A '68 Z/28 should have a 814 alternator. ;)

Thats a good point. The service manual will cover most of everything that I would be able to do at my skill level without having someone else do the work that I can't. I just want to learn everything I can about my car.
