Title: VIN Stamp bona fides
Post by: 67 kemie ss on March 26, 2012, 02:00:29 AM
I'm looking at 69Z to purchase.  The seller sent me this photo of the tranny VIN stamp.  It doesn't look right to me.  Anyone care to comment?

Looking at the VIN, it appears to have been issued between end of Feb thru March '69
The tranny casting date looks to be the first week of Feb (2 + 1 dot) but a better view will be needed to make sure the dot is not a casting artifact.
It looks like the P-code is 93 XXX(can't make the rest out) so that would be March 69
So far the date periods look good.
What is the tranny case number?
Can you get a picture of the engine VIN stamp too to compare to the tranny and the trim tag?

Mike

Case number is 660 and the dates line up.  But the font on transmission VIN stamp doesn't match the font type of block VIN stamp, which I now remember being told should match.  I think I've answered my question.

I think it's an original stamp.

Yup, different stamp. I've seen that before.
I'd have to see the pad stamp to make a call on the block, but looks OK so far....

Wouldn't the trans vin stamp have a 1 in front of the 9N609807 ?

Mine does, format  19Nxxxxxx,  same on the trans as on the side of the block above the Oil Filter...

Yes all the stampings I have include the 1 designating Chevrolet.

Not a great pic, but I think that's an original engine pad stamp.

Charley,
Good question. I think it should have it, but I also found some stamps that didn't. I relooked at those other stamps and I think they actually did have the 1, but it's just hard to see (either pic or funky stamp). So though I think the engine is OK, I changed my mind on the trans.
Thanks for keeping me honest guys. :)

I don't think it's good.

I agree.

The numbers and letter seem to be the correct font, but I have never seen an original without the 1 in the front.
