Hi guys im looking to buy a DZ long block im not sure what to look for i know about numbers . But im concerned about block condition cylinder bore and heads What questions should i ask about motor, this is my first time looking to buy I hope you guys can steer me in the right direction thanks ???

Is it used or rebuilt? If it's used do you have it apart so you can see the cylinders and heads? If it's rebuilt has it been bored both line and cylinder? That's what I need to know before I can give you an answer. But in general I wouldn't want a block that has been bored over 30 thousandths. Has the crank been turned down? I wouldn't want one turned over 10 thousandths on mains or rods. Have the heads been reworked? New guides? New seats? New valves? New springs? The list can go on and the measurements I gave you are my opinion. I'm sure others will differ buy this is me. As I stated earlier tell us what you are looking at then we can go from there. Post some pics of the engine if you can especially the pad stamp.

Hi Daniel I'm going to look at it in 2 days . heads are off other than that not much more info i will try to post some pictures if i can figure it out

the motor is used sitting for some time Ill have more in a couple of days thanks for your help

The stamp looks real.... engine appears to need a rebuild prior to use, but to be certain you need to disassemble and take to a machine shop to have it thorughly checked. In the current assembled state you can check if std bore or *larger*, and you can check the cylinder ridge to see how worn it is in the cylinders. Generally you should probably consider it to need a minimal boring, and you'll be very lucky if you don't. that means new pistons, and I also align bore (when it's an unknown engine), and check the crank journals. Up to 10 thousandths doesn't bother me either...
(make sure if they do a clean up on the deck, that they stop short of the stamp pad; that stamp looks great so you wouldn't want to disturb it)..

Ok getting good feedback thanks. Next question considering all issues what am i expected to pay for machine work. Block is complete with heads no intake, carb, waterpump, dist.what would be a fair price thanks again

This looks to be the long block that "427-King" has listed on e-bay for $5,000.00. If so, I would confirm all the numbers on this block even if it means taking the oil pan to check the crank and rod numbers...
I bought what was supposed to be a real DZ 302 carb from 427-King and it turned out to be a service carb without the correct metering blocks that came on real DZ carb..Since I did not asked about the metering block based on his claim that it was a real date coded DZ carb, I just chalked it up for another lesson learned. However, when I tried to recontact "427-King" from my e-bay account, I was blocked from asking question him additional questions. Are you looking for a V 03 motor or just a true DZ motor..If so, PM me and I'll get you in touch with someone that has one for much less.

Since seeing the pictures the only real advice I could offer is to take it to a reputable machine shop and tear it down so you can mic everything. You can't tell by looking what shape the internals are in. While you are there have the block checked for cracks. It's going to cost to have this done so figure that into the price. As for the heads they need to go to the shop too. Check for cracks, worn valve guides, valve seats need to be checked.There's a lot of things that need to be checked.
