Title: Roy Woods Racing, California Trans-Am racers
Post by: Jon Mello on March 02, 2012, 05:03:11 PM
Roy Woods started his Trans-Am team in 1969 with a single '69 Camaro and then branched out a 2-car Camaro team in 1970, adding Milt Minter in the other team car. For 1971, Woods switched to AMC Javelins when he got two cars from Roger Penske. In 1972, Roy Woods took over as the factory AMC team from Roger Penske as Roger went off to other endeavors and the factory participation fell to nearly nothing besides AMC.

Thanks to Ken Ulrich, who moved over from the Todco Racing team to Roy Woods for 1972, we have pictures of Wood's team from that '72 season.

Some of the BEST RWR stuff that I've seen!!!   I know of TWO of those intakes, and have always wondered about their origin.....did they come from Penske or did RWR have those built.  The other one that I've seen has TWO four barrels.  And the exhaust system looks like the 71 Penske version...probably a carryover.  I've got a very similar set that came with Buzz Dyer's old car.  I believe Buzz has one on his 70 Javelin to this day.

Great period article on this 1970 season, '69 ARA Camaro.  Thanks for posting this, Jon.

Though many corrections could be made to the text, one that I think really deserves straightening out is where the article states:

"Similar to the Penske-Donohue Camaro, ARA has installed a Watts Linkage aft of the rear end housing."

The Penske Camaros used a Panhard bar, not a Watts Link.

This ARA Camaro is awfully similar to a 1969 Titus-Godsall Firebird in it's construction, given that Jerry Schwarz put his hands on both.

Really fantastic detail photos in this article, even if they're reproduced on newsprint style paper.

Why was I thinking the RWR Camaro was ex-Penske?   I know they "revised" the '70 Javelins to '71 specs, but I always thought this car was bought and prepared much like the following year..    so where was the '69 champ car in '70?    Ken

For the '70 season the ARA racing team had two '69 Camaros.  One was ex-Penske and the other was their own creation.

I have not heard from Ken regarding measurements and I suspect he would not have that information now. I'll see if I can remember to take a photo when I'm at the Sonoma Historics in June.

Here's the Roy Woods' Camaro at the ARRC event at Daytona in November '69. Roy placed 5th and the race
for the SCCA National A/Sedan Championship was won by Bill Petree (in another '69 Camaro) from Michigan.

Peter Revson climbs into his Roy Woods Javelin prior to the '71 Michigan Trans-Am. These Roy Woods Javelins
were reskinned 1970 Javelins raced by Penske during the 1970 season. I didn't know you could simply do a
reskin job on these cars as they look very different to me than the '70 version, but that's what I heard was done.

I remember an article in the Speed and Sport paper, an interview with Woods about updating the cars-- It's quite involved.. ???   From the rear doorjamb forward is bolt-on; doors and windshield are the same for all Javelins, as is back glass, rear valance and trunk lid...   71 and up cars are "taller" in the taillight panel, moving the spoiler and decklid up... so, different quarters, tail, roof and all the internal sheet metal that goes with those items......  then throw in the 1 inch shorter weelbase of a 70 car, and you have a bunch of new AMC sheetmetal which " ...doesn't quite fit... >:(       Ken

The rear bumper is also the same from 68-74.   Kudos to AMC for keeping things 'budget'.  I too would love to see how RWR got those 71 quarters on the 1" shorter 70 chassis.  I think it forced them to make the quarter window smaller, lengthwise.  That's the only place that it appears, to me, the car is different from the 71 Penske-built car.

Competition Press & Autoweek race report covering the ARRC event at Raod Atlanta. This ARRC event is
run for the national championship in each car category. Roy Woods won the A-sedan national championship
in this late November '70 race. Roy was using Camaros in Trans-Am for the entire 1970 season and had
bought the two Penske Javelins after the end of the Trans-Am season. Note that the article indicatates
that they had already pulled the car apart to begin converting it into a '71 but then had to put it back
to a '70 bodystyle to make this race. Many thanks to Mike K (Swede70) for sharing this with us.

Great stuff Jon,
RWR was quite an operation I wonder what their source of funding was?? Somebody must have had some pretty deep pockets........... I especially liked their double deck transporter, that was one cool unit.

Al, I'm pretty sure it was Roy who had the deep pockets but I don't know where the money came from. I'm pretty sure he was not just a front for somebody else's money.

Was RWR sponsored by Carling at some point? Seem to recall the cars having the Carling Black Label logo, but that may have been later in the 70's....

Here's a nice article from Competition Press & Autoweek that gives some good insight into Roy Woods and his team.
Many thanks to Craig Wheeldon for sharing this with us. Yes, Carling did sponsor Roy's cars starting in 1973.

Jon,
Do you know where in Gardena the Kastner-Brophy Inc.  Co. was located?

Just came by these pictures of the RWR Javelin during one of it's restorations.
Original post here, http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/?showtopic=67624

Here are some pics of that Javelin. It's a 1971 Javelin, built by Roger Penske Racing and driven to the 1971 Championship by Mark Donohue. It was then sold to Roy Woods Racing and driven to the 72 Championship by George Follmer. We restored this car 2x. After the 1st, the owner had parked it outdoors under a sheet of plastic and with tarps over that. Even though it was in sunny southern California, moisture trapped under the plastic destroyed the lacquer paint inside and out. We also did a more extensive restoration the 2nd time. Including repairing some crash damage inflicted in the TransAm wars in the Penske days. It had been nicely repaired, but there was 2" thick bondo in the front inner panels ahead of the wheel wells. And this 2nd time we took the car down to the bare and rebuilt it completely.

From the post information this information is from Richard Parcells.

Thanks Jon, Gardena was a hot bed of Hi Performance and racing activity back in the day. My hometown, and where the Jones brothers started  racing Jalopies in the 50's.

Very glad to hear that you are enjoying the photos. That's why I'm doing this and why others share.

From the Bryar Trans-Am. Not sure if it's a picture of the girl, the Pinto or the RWR wagon.  :D

One minor correction is that the team station wagon is an Ambassador instead of Matador. Easiest way to tell from the angle that it is shot in the top photo is the chrome vertical edge of the front bumper is at the bottom of the fender front. A Matador had a wrap-around grill/bumper and from this angle the outer edge would be at the top of the front fender. Also the Ambo has a tall blunt fender front edge whereas the Mat is tapered.

Here are some Roy Woods Javelin images from the 1971 season. The track may be Mid-Ohio but I'm not 100% sure.
