Title: Thinking About Buying a Parts Car?!?
Post by: lakeholme on February 18, 2012, 09:54:41 PM
Better Buy It....
We went by one of the largest junk yards in the Southeast today. It used to have over a dozen wrecked first gen Camaros, but they were all gone! Where? To the scrap yard.
The owner told me that he had sent two/thirds of his parts cars to scrap, because scrap metal prices are higher than he can make off parting out the cars. He had pulled some carbs, etc., but the sheet metal had gone to the scrap yard.

There's a wreaking yard in Vancouver WA I went to a while back and they had 15 or 20 1st gens there.  Most of them have been really picked over.  What's left isn't much.  I wouldn't feel so bad about those going to the smelter cause there's nothing worth using.

Out where I'm at I haven't seen a first gen in a salvage yard in 16 or 17 years.  The last one I seen was a nice 68 6cyl car with a column shift PG. Car was white with a red interior in good restoration condition it was complete and ran although it smoked. I tried to buy it but they wouldn't sell it. I was working on a 69 RS at the time and thought the 68 would make a nice economical driver.  I went back a week later with cash in hand to try and buy it again but they had crushed it.

In Denton off NC 49.  There is little of it left.  It used to cover all the way down the mountain to the creek with Mopar, Ford, Chevy, etc. sections.  Cars were stored in long rows, door to door.  I suppose it is still worth the trip, but don't be expecting much.

Sooo, do you ever make it out to Autofair?

Thanks for the heads up about the jy in Denton.

Yes I go to the Autofair every year. I will be showing one of my 69's Sunday at the Autofair. I am a member of Classic Camaros of the Carolinas. Want to join!?
