Title: 1972 Mosport race for "Trans-Am type" cars
Post by: Jon Mello on February 13, 2012, 06:15:59 AM
Courtesy of Craig Wheeldon, we have a "non-championship Trans-Am race program" from 8/13/72, which had been the date of a scheduled Mosport T/A race until it was canceled along with the rest of the series that year (due to George Follmer dominating the '72 Trans-Am series in his Roy Woods Javelin). The race was run instead as a memorial to a well-known Ontario (Canada) couple who had been very involved with motorsports until they died in a plane crash in 1971. Many of the regular competitors showed for the race, and to my understanding, Warren Tope won. If anyone has official results from this race, please post them.

These results have been supplied to me by a CMSHG member -

1)  Warren Tope  2)  Mo Carter  3)  Milt Minter  4)  Warren Agor 5)  Dick Brown  6)  Carl Shafer

No surprises there - Tope was a great talent - Mo had the advantage of a home track, but remember, he was 52 already and still racing very hard.  Minter, Agor, Brown - all seasoned competors in Trans-Am.

I remember when Carl Shafer first showed up in Trans-Am he was about the same speed as I was.  Just shows you what lots of seat time and good equipment can do.

Rick Stevens had mechanical problems with our recently acquired ex Alfie Ruys de Perez 69 camaro.  Must have been that the previous 6 hr Camel GT race we did at Mid-Ohio, created some problems.

If I remember, Mo Carter was the driving force behind this race - he got it organized and persuaded the drivers to support it.

Thanks for the info, Robert. How would you rate the Mosport track in comparison to Mt Tremblant (St Jovite) or for that matter, the Sanair track?

Never ran at Sanair but I don't think you can compare it to the ups and downs of either St. Jovite or Mosport.  Hard to pick one over the other - certainly both are in my top five list.

Thanks, Robert. Great feedback. I guess I should have looked at the aerial shot of Sanair to realize it was sort of an add-on to an airstrip/dragstrip but I primarily brought it up because of its proximity to Montreal and the Mt Tremblant track, plus the T/A cars did run there in '72 and '73.

I know this is an old thread but I found a few photos that were taken at the event on the Remembering Mosport Facebook page.  They were posted by Greg Wong back on January 15, 2015.
