Title: Stock looking ignition conversion on e-Bay
Post by: Mike S on January 28, 2012, 03:21:55 PM
This conversion sure has my interest. It uses the stock single wire from the distributor and coil so it retains the stock look. Has anybody used this or know of someone who has?

Thanks,

I have never used this particular set up but I have used this one by Pertronix. These conversions are used by lots of people.

That "Breakerless SE" one-wire conversion has been around for many years - it's manufactured by M&H Fabricators (the wire harness folks), and has been marketed for years by Lectric Limited.

Thanks, John. That's good to know and I see after researching that conversion kit under the Lectric name that it has been around for a while.
Seems like a good work around to having to clean the points from oxidation when the car sits for a long while.
I didn't want to change the stock look with an aftermarket 2 wire units which is why I kept using the points.

FYI, I used a "Dave's Small Body HEI" which has the stock appearance but supplies one heckuva spark. Pulled a plug recently and it was perfect. I ordered and bought mine from Dave in person before he relocated to NV permanently, but I think you can order one (you will need to supply the core and detail your requirements to him before he will start work). Cut and paste the qute above into Google, should come right up. Well worth it, been really happy with it (a specific coild will also be required). I had problems with the first two generations of Pertronix.

Bought one of the name brand units with the extra wire...oh about 5 years ago.
Installed it......the car ran great but I got spooked by it, because a friend of mine put one in his 69 Firebird, and it died on him over 50 miles away from home coming back from a car show.
He called, and I brought him points / condensor and tools to a Delaware town......4 hrs later he was back on the road.

One thing you can say......the liklihood of points leaving you stranded is almost nil.
These new pointless systems for old cars just make me nervous.
Great idea....but no thanks.  I'll keep my points system.

I find it very hard to leave my points system too. I have always kept a set of points and condenser in the glove box in all my old vehicles. If they go bad I can be back on the road in 10 minutes.

I agree about the potentials of electronic failure though the new cars I have owned from the 90's and on never had an electronic module failure anymore (now that I think of it maybe because the electronics are now mounted on cooler surfaces compared to the inside of a distributor...when they were still used) .
I still use points in my boat for the reason of reliability because a sea tow is very $$$$ overall and using a boat is seasonal in NY.
I don't use my Camaros' as often as I should and when trying to start them was a challenge. Cleaning the points worked in those situations even though it took only 10 minutes. If (big if) I do go with an electronic unit, I'll certainly have a point/capacitor set in the travel tools just in case. Then again, having a mechanical anything setup (ignition, fuel pump, clutch, etc) on an antique car is part of the overall ownership, fun and pride I guess. Sort of like having a kick start Harley vs. an electric starter today. ;)
Well..heck...Sounds like I just talked myself into staying with points!  :D

I have a points triggered CD ignition. The only real benefit I got out of the conversion was an adjustable rev limiter.  Nice to have especially if I ever need to leave the car with someone for service. You can set the RPM limit pretty low and that takes all the "joy" out of a joy ride. :)

I just might go back to 100% stock if I ever get around to replacing the distributor.
