Title: 1969 console verification
Post by: camaro jock on January 23, 2012, 11:13:54 PM
I am looking to update my 1969 with a correct oem console my dilemma is the 2 that I am looking at are different, 1 has a notch or cutout at the bottom of the console at a location you would call under the dash and the other one does not. Could 1 be from a Monte Carlo/Chevelle, or could there a difference in 68 and 69. Thanks for your time Darrell D.

Darrell, most people aren't aware of this (including the repop houses), but the 68 console is different than the 69. The 68 has a small cutout on the front for the wire harness to pass through (see the upper picture below), while the 69 has the larger cutout where the mounting bracket with the wiring harness clip passes through. I don't have a picture of the 69 console, but you can see what I mean by the composit I made of the 69 AIM, UPC D55 sheet A2 and sheet A6 (specifially view A) in the lower picture below.

No problem Darrell, but good luck finding the 69 console bracket (number 3 in the above drawing from sheet A2 - P/N 3949617). As far as I know, the only one available in reproduction is the 68 and it doesn't have the wiring harness receptical on it. However, it appears HEARTBEAT CITY (http://www.heartbeatcitycamaro.com/store/product/23216/Console-mount-bracket-w-gauges/) has it "used", but it's not cheap! And it's even more expensive in his EBAY AUCTION (http://www.ebay.com/itm/1968-1969-Camaro-Console-mount-bracket-w-gauges-/330629054688?hash=item4cfb0700e0&item=330629054688&pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr)!

Looks to me like the clip attached to the wiring harness.  AIM drawing says part of 2, 2 is the wiring harness.  Most all wiring harness' have the clip attached.

I'm not referring to the clip attached to the harness. I'm referring to the "receptical" that's part of the 69 mounting "bracket assy" (See sheet 6, View A).

I ordered a new complete console from Heartbeat because the original one has many stripped out screw holes and a cracked door. I haven't received it yet so I can't compare them. Did I make a mistake if I am tiring to keep the car original in appearance? I have the front bracket. It is an early 69 if that matters.

I will let Ed and the others comment but the reason that I wanted an oem one was that the graining in the console was not quite right also the sheen on the repops is a little off. Just my opinion. thanks Darrell D.

I got a repop But not from Heart beat city and I'm very pleased. Of course it had to be painted cause they only come in Black.

A 69's cut-out (much larger then the 68's as stated by Ed)...
