It's engraved in the case itself, along with the date code and other information.

Although not the starter you are looking for, this is an example of a starter p/n and date code.

Also understand that if a rebuilt starter has been installed at some point in the car's history, the stamping on the armature case could be almost anything; when a starter goes through a commercial rebuilder's operation, they're re-assembled based on matching functional parts, not numbered parts. Many commercial rebuilders these days grind the numbers off starters and alternators to eliminate confusion.

thanks all. i did have a rebuilt starter in my car that was an 1108430 from a 71 car. i just got the correct 1108338 starter from goat hill classics in californis. just put it in today. as soon as i get the carb back from jerry macneish, and the radiator back in it, i can get it running. the gardner exhaust went in last week. talk about a perfect fit!!!! i wish i knew how to post photos. i would love to show off the progress.
