Title: 1969 Camaro passenger door mirror location
Post by: sdkar on December 06, 2011, 03:29:30 PM
Hey guys,

Does anyone know the proper mounting location of the passenger door mirror?  Is it the same dimensions as the driver side or is it further forward or back?  My pace car has a passenger mirror that is installed 2-1/2" further back from the fender than the driver side.  Not sure if this mirror is dealer installed or factory.  Was the passenger mirror even offered as a factory option?  Was it a dealer option only?

Where my passenger door mirror is installed seems to be perfect as I have no problem aiming it exactly where I want it.  So, what's the correct location?  Let me know if you pass. mirror is in the exact dimension as your driver side or is it different.

Thanks,

Steve

Passenger side mirrors were dealer installed only and the locations varied, depending on who was assigned to install it!

Ed - I found this thread over at TC. Is it true the holes, or pre-punced locations in the sheet metal were done at the factory (Reply #5)? And, I also found Reply #4 interesting...I guess no matter where its located its best to trial fit before drilling.

Keep reading. Especially my reply #9.

Yes, the holes on the DRIVER side were prepunched, but not on the passenger door.

No holes, or even dimples showing where to drill holes in the passenger side doors from the factory.  There is a hole in the drivers door skin for the remote control mirror, cable, and two small holes for the drivers mirror but thats it.  The guys on the line positioned the the mirror bracket using sheetmetal screws  as the car went down the line.

My passenger mirror was dealer installed.  Not sure if there were any dealer notes on the placement or if they just put it where it worked best.  Surely they had to have something to go by as I am betting they did not want to have mirrors installed where the buyers could not use them and then have to re-install them and fill in the holes they just drilled into someone's brand new Camaro.

When I first noticed the difference, I thought that whoever installed the mirror did so with no thought as to what was proper and just screwed it in wherever.  However, if you place the mirror in the exact location as the driver side, the mirror has to come in too far and doesn't really give a good viewing angle.  However, when screwed in where the original holes are, the angle is just about perfect and the mirror is centered very nicely where you have an almost equal adjustment distance up/down and side to side.

My driver mirror is about 3" from the door edge and the passenger mirror if about 5-1/2" from the door edge.  That works great for me.  If anyone wants photos or measurements on the placement of my mirror, I will be happy to send them to you.

I have a remote drivers mirror and I have never seen a matching passenger side mirror. Does one exist?

If you mean a remote passenger side mirror, the answer is no.

Thanks Ed perhpas I should re phrase that question. Is there a matching mirror to the remote mirror as they are different. Just curious is there is only one standard passenger side mirror. I have never sen a car with a paasenger side mirror and a remote mirror as well.

Dealers were instructed to install the same shape of mirror as installed on the driver side. For 1967 this would be a round mirror and for 1968 and 1969, this would be the rectangular mirror.

Mike - My car also came with the D33 option. I have thought long and hard about installing an outside passenger mirror for obvious reasons. If you decide to go that route, please post some pics. At this point in time I think combining the two styles would look too funky.

The dealer installed mirror that came on my 68 was three inches from the door edge and.... "If you pushed the seat all the way back, sat up really straight in your seat, and leaned to the right, you could see down the side of the car...." Needless to say, when we did the repaint a few years ago, I moved it 5 1/2 inches from the door edge and now it is fine.  Good advice, Steve.

I hear you Marty. I want a passenger side mirror as well, but think that the regular production unit would look odd compared to the bulkier drivers side remote unit. Not sure but perhaps there is a matching unit on another model from GM that would work? I wonder if there is a way to fab one up from an orginal drivers side unit and the base from a passenger side unit? I am going to look into that. Let me know if you come up with any ideas as well.

IMO, having two mirrors NOT located in the same relative locations on the doors would look funky too.   I've been under the impression that there wre no passenger side mirrors available (from the factory) in '69....   True or not?    Am I correct in assuming that any mirror mounted to the passenger door by a dealer would have been the LH mirror just mounted on the RH side?

Not correct. GM offered a right side (passenger) mirror for most cars and trucks in the 60's. They just weren't "factory" installed.

For example, the original P/N for the 1969 Camaro Remote driver's side mirror was 3957203. The P/N for the standard Camaro driver's side mirror was 3914753. The P/N for the 1969 Camaro Passenger's side mirror was 993595.

Not quite. GMPD furnished the RH mirror for many years under #3914754; I must have sold dozens of them.

BTW the '69 Camaro remote mirror was serviced for many years under some other number. Was used on GM X-bodies until 1979. Only difference was the adjusting knob.

Thank you Ed and William for the information.   I have an original '69 Z28 (w/factory remote driver's mirror).. I *really* wanted a RH mirror when I was driving it regularly in the '70's, but was told there was not one for the RH side *originally*.
How are the RH mirrors (of any type) judged in the '69 original classes??

Yeah, part numbers are a little strange. P/N 993595 was the "assembly" from the 1969 Chevrolet Accessories manual, and came with the mirror, hardware, instructions and template. P/N 3914754 that William posted was a service part number and also consisted of the mirror and hardware, but I don't think (and William can verify this) it came with the instructions or template.

IMO, having two mirrors NOT located in the same relative locations on the doors would look funky too.

The problem (having measured mirrors) is the 68-69 passenger mirrors are exact mirror images of the driver's mirror.  But the angle from the driver(seat)  to passenger mirror is different from the driver's side mirror.  If you will look at both mirrors on a newer car, you will see that the angle in the construction of the passenger's mirror is diferent from the driver's side mirror to compensate for the sight angle of the driver.  Apparently, that was not done in 68-69, so you have to decide between funky or functional.  In my book, 2 1/2 inches is relative enough because I want functional.

That's the correct mirror for 69 built after the August, 1968 timeframe.

Whew - Is that the alphabetical time clock to the left of the escutcheon number?

Also, 1969 Fisher Service Manual 14-3, Fig 14-8 shows their interpretation of all escutcheon's for the exception of Pontiac, which is shown on pg. 14-5 Fig. 14-13. The latter pic is the one I have. Is Camaro considered a Pontiac style as stated in Fig. 14-13?

Sorry Steve. I have a hard time staying on topic. :-\

No, the one you have is the version with the screws that hold it to the panel. Correct for the Camaro. The Pontiac version doesn't have the two screws.

It must have been the fixed collar on Fisher's Pontiac drawing that threw me. I Should have taken a closer look at the screws.

Thanks for your help Ed!

If that is the case, logic (always risky) says there probably was a comparable passenger side mirror for some of those x-bodies, which while not correct might be less funky in appearance for those looking to have a passenger side mirror to go with the driver side remote mirror.

The passenger side mirror for the x-body cars that used the driver side remote. Would take a little digging through the parts lists that I don't have. I would want to see pictures before any decision. Matters not to me, I don't have the remote mirror anyway.

Tom - Is the mirror you're talking about the D68 on this list? Sorry...its a long list. Something tells me no but its worth a shot. Its miserable driving w/o a passenger mirror. If the answer is yes, I'd sure like to see a pic. Just wondering if it comes anywhere close to Camaro's D33? No sure about the year on the Olds mirror.

If anyone else has a pic of the mirror Tom is talking about please post a pic or maybe a link where it can be viewed.

<Oh no :o I Had to edit... hope its okay Bob?> :)

I have no idea. Just thinking out loud. If the service replacement mirror was used on newer cars, there may have been a suitable passenger side mirror that was original to those newer cars. I have no books or numbers for this part, it might not exist.
IF I wanted one . . . I would check what was or is available for the newer cars that William listed above. By 79 most cars had passenger side mirrors. Good hunting, I'm out of this thread....

Thanks Tom. I should have just gone with my instincts and forgot about the mirror. There wasn't one and there will never be one that makes sense/matches up to a D33. I'll just have my wife hold out her portable vanity mirror while we're out and about.  :)

No info yet on what the dealer used to determine the placement of the passenger mirror.  I should find it odd that there could not be something as the opportunity for customer complaint and incorrect holes being drilled into sheetmetal seem great.

To be honest, no one notices the mirrors are not in the same spot unless you really make a point of looking.  The mirror functionaly works and has the correct viewing angle so I am going to assume mine was installed with some thought put into where it was to be mounted.

I have an NOS 3914754 that William mentions.  Most GM dealer installed parts come with some kind of instructions (rear speaker kit, rear defrost kit, etc. - and yes, I am aware those may have also been assy line installed, but they were also available OTC) but this one did not.  Not sure if all of them came sans instructions, but IIRC (big if) this box had never been opened when I got it.
