Title: '69 Z/28 positive battery cable
Post by: GaryL on November 08, 2011, 02:31:42 AM
Is the # 6290592 the right cable for the #Y55 battery?  Or is the #6290591 as shown on T60-A1 in the AIM? It is interesting that the Z/28 cables are shown in the HD battery section. It seems a bit confusing.

Yours would be for a Y55 battery, so the broadcast codes would be MF and BF. I'll let someone else confirm the #'s.

John Z, is it the 51 or 52 positive cable? do you have the originals? Thanks.

I replaced mine ten years ago - they were corroded internally.

The AIM shows the Z/28 cables under the T60 option. The XXXXX51 cable seems to be the one but the vendors say XXXXX52 is correct. It is weird that the Z/28 cables are shown uinder the T60 option, but which number is correct? Thanks.

The optional T60 HD battery cables (small block) part# for small block Pos 6290591BW, & Neg 6296756BH These were used in conjuction with the R69 70ah battery.

The Z28 came equipped prior 5/69 with Y55 top terminal battery. The two codes I have seen on broadcast sheets are MF(for pos cable and BF (for neg cable). I will dig up the part# and pics. Z28's built 5/69 and after came standard with Y77 battery and cables 6297684AS (pos cable) 7 6297651AV (neg cable).

Steve, page T60-A1 shows #6290591 for Z/28. The reporo catalogues show #6290592 for Z/28. I find it odd that Z/28 cables are in the T60 section at all. My experience with #6290592 is that they are very tight in length. The extra length of the #6290591 would fit better on the Y55 battery.

Posiitive 6290592BR and Neg 6296758BJ

I went thru all the broadcast sheets that I have and all the Z's (20-30 of them) have a MF cable except one that has a BR cable on it. No other docs on that car, but I'd guess that car probably had T60.
Hey, if it fits, that's what matters...

BTW, the Z cables on the T60 page are only if the car has T60. 6290592 would have been the cable for the L6 and the base LF7/L14 motors with T60, per that page. Not to say it couldn't have other usages....

I do not see MF cables reproduced. The BR is the one most people say is corrrect. The BR  fits tight on the Y33 battery, though. Another thing with no definitive answer. What would Jerry M. use?

Gary I use the reproduction  BR cable on three of my Z28's and my cables do not fit snug at all. BTW I use factory fit cables. Have you checked the routing and length of the cable.

My 02D Z/28 was delivered new in Canada, and had T60; I replaced the original (corroded) cables ten years ago with the same number reproduction cables (592-BR positive, 756-BH negative). It had a Delco #24-7YR battery in it when I bought it, and I just replaced it a few months ago with the same Delco Professional Series #24-7YR battery. Only lasted 12 years  ;D  Photo below shows its current battery and cable configuration, which is the same as its original configuration.

And that BR cable would be too short for a Y55 battery since it's a reverse terminal set-up (+ next to the fender).
So the MF cable would be longer.

The reproduction (factory fit ) BR positive cable has plenty of length as pictured in the post above to reach either teminal.  The BH negative is very tight(fender ground wire) for the reverse terminal setup. Your point is correct, but my reproduction cables fit otherwise. It would be helpful to compare the oriiginals to the repops.

Yeah, I could see how that would fit OK. John's neg cable would be long if that was a Y55 battery.

Does anyone reproduce the 6297684 AS positive battery cable? My 06A 69 Z has this cable on it.

Thanks,

Larry

Larry, did you try AMERICAN AUTOWIRE (http://www.americanautowire.com/) as Steve suggested in your ORIGINAL (http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=9209.0) thread?

Of course, your other option would be to spend stupid money on THIS ONE (http://www.ebay.com/itm/1969-Z28-survivor-battery-cables-X77-after-5-69-302DZ-6297684AS-6297651AV-gm-/330741859104).

Gary this guy is selling American Autowire. I got mine from him off the bay. He had a big sale going on and I saved about 20% on my order but of course I spent about $1000.00 with him that night.

Buddy

"For LOS cars, the change to side post batteries occurred during the 05A week (cowl tag date). For NOR cars, it appears the change to the Y77 side post battery occurred in late April, while the R79 side post battery was used starting in early- to mid-May."

Thanks Paul. Of course my car is 05A. I own the car since 1978, but know of the car since 1975. It has always had a top mount battery in it. Anyone else close in production with a Norwood car ?

Buddy,
Your car is a NOR, so it's clearly after the side post change.

Thanks Kurt. I have owned it since 1978, and it had top mount cables then.

when I first bought my car (late 09C) in 1976, I had several people to tell me that the 'side mount battery is wrong for the car'.. and encouraged me to put in a topmount battery and change the cables...  I later learned the real story, and was glad I never followed their advice, but I'm sure the same thing happened to many other late build camaros during that period!  so maybe yours was one of them X77??

Curious does anyone have a pic of the original spring ring cables? (part numbers on the cables) for the Y55 battery.  thanks
