AMK Products book says the Hex nut type was used from 64 to 68, and the Square nut style was used from 69 thru 72.  AMK provides a LOT of restoration fasteners, I'd trust them until somebody proves it wrong.

I know on my 68 a lot of the j nuts originally were the square kind and most if not all the repros are the hex nut type. IE. the top radiator shroud bracket.  The original nuts are square but the repro I purchased had hex nuts on it and the bracket isn't 100% correct either.  I bought a used one.  One of my many pert peeves.  I don't know much about 69's though.
