Title: Where does this wire go
Post by: sixt9x33rs on October 29, 2011, 11:27:30 AM
I have a 69 convertible with am/fm and the radio comes on but no sound. I am guessing the speaker has failed so I took the speaker out to be reconed. While doing so I discovered what appears to be a loose groundwire. Can anyone tell me where this goes or what it is for?

Thanks,

Lawrence

If its black It should be a ground  and screw to the brace behind it .

The hole in the brace behind it, uses a small hex head screw with a star (grounding) washer between the brace and the wire end.

Should this wire connect to the radio brace? Not clear on where it should go?
Would this wire not being connected cause the radio not to work?

The black brace in your picture , it grounds the radio and several other things .

The radio will not work unless it is grounded properly.
Here is a pic of where and how the black wire is attached.

When you said the radio comes on I guess you mean the lights? Then it is grounded already. If you install the unit correctly it is usually grounded. The wire insures that viberations don,t cause the ground to come and go. Open the unit and if you see brown paper pieces scattered, I wish you luck.

When I turn the radio on the lights come on but there is no sound. This same situation occurred on my 69 RS Z  and this issue was a bad speaker. I plan on plugging this speaker into my Z28 radio and see if I get any sound. If none I will have the speaker rebuilt like it did with the other speaker from the Z. If I get sound I guess I have a radio issue or this ground wire is the problem. Honestly I don't think this ground wire will keep the radio from playing. I wish someone would tell me for sure  ???

It is one of the grounds for the main dash harness, the other is under the light switch. Radios have their own ground wire into the harness grounds.  Speakers don't have grounds.  This wire is tied to the main grounding wire in the harness along with the other one.  Grounds would find the other wire, but I guess if all the lights, radio, etc was on, it needs two wires for the load.  Install it. Radio not working is another issue.

If the radio is OK, but the speaker (coil) is bad, you can usually hear a faint sound from output stages if you turn the volume to max. I would connect another speaker up first, and also verify you in fact have power to the radio.
