Title: Drive Train Date Codes vs. Body build date.
Post by: cshelto on June 12, 2006, 07:01:37 PM
I am looking at purchasing a 69 ss350.  The build date from the motor and trans are 10 months older than the body production date.  Is this possible and can it be proven?  Here are the numbers.

FIREWALL TAG         ST6972437  NOR35579643, TR 723   57  57,  06A  X11

DASH VIN TAG          124379N659642

BLOCK  SUFFIX TAB  19N659642   V0511HA ,      CAST DATE  8 H 28

BELLHOUSING           GM 3858404

MUNCIE TRANSMISSION    P8H26A,     3925660 BODY , 3857584 TAIL, 3831707 COVER

Thanks!

Shawn

Unless it is a replacement block and tranny( which it doesn't appear to be) I venture to guess it is a restamp on the block. Way to far out in my opinion.

Trans isn't original to the car. Re-check the casting date - "8 H 28" doesn't make sense.

Previous posts have referenced 6 months in advance of final build as being acceptable for "correctly" date coded items.

From what I've observed, engine and transmission build dates usually are within a few days in advance of final vehichle assembly.  That being said, some interesting anomalies have been noted with regard to the rear end assemblies. In several previous CRG posts, documented rear end build dates 3+ months ahead of final vehicle assembly have been noted.  For example, the 2.73:1 open rear end in my '69 RS (01C build) was built October 18, 1968, 3 months in advance of final vehicle assembly.

Transmission is restamped.  Muncie didn't start using the A,B, and C suffixes until mid October of 68, The transmission assembly date as written above is from June 26th 1967 P 8 H26A.  Muncie used the last number of the model year, so a 69 should start  with a P9.   You won't find a real muncie with a date before P9R21 with a suffix code on it.  With a definate transmission restamp and a motor cast 11 months before the car was built you can bet it's been restamped as well.

Thank you everyone for your response.  I felt that there is something shady going on and you have confirmed my suspicion.  If anyone has a #2 condition camaro within 500 miles of Virginia let me know.

Best regards,

Shawn
