I have a build date 5A 69 Z/28 that came out of the LA plant. It came to me with two piece front power disc brake rotors. Any chance these are original to the car?

05A LOS cars were the strike cars :) What is your VIN? According to what I have read the Van Nuys plant worker struck at end of April until near June. Then approx 1000 05A cars were built from early June to into July to finish up their on-hand supply of bodys and parts. I think the 05A cars started at around 530156 and ended at 531163, based on a old magazine. My 05A car is 530353, so it was around 200 cars into the batch.

I thought the one piece rotors came out in late 1970 early 71???

Thanks for the info. I didn't know about the "strike" affecting completion and delivery of my car. My vin ends with 530885. The Oregon DMV records I got for the car show it was initially licensed on September 2, 1969 from a local dealer and remained in the local area for its entire life. I've spoken to the dealer (now retired) and while he doesn't remember this car specifically, he does recall ordering them in virtually the same configuration and color which matches mine quite well.

While we are on this subject, can anyone tell me if the two-piece rotors were actually outlawed? I heard something to this
effect a number of years ago. I recently found a pair of early take off front two-piece rotors ( never turned ) from a '69 Z/28
drag car. What a find ! They are destined for my L/78.....
I heard that the rotor and hub could separate under hard driving conditions, so that is why they were outlawed. Anyone got
any information on this?
Surprisingly, I never looked into build date vs/ two-piece rotor usage before. Having an early build car, I ALWAYS have to look for
the special parts...... :o ::) :'( Were all 1969 Camaro's with front disk brakes equipped with two-piece rotors?

2-piece rotors were never "outlawed"; that's some kind of "urban legend". There are lots of cars out there today with 2-piece rotors, all of them very high-priced.

Not to answer for John, but looking in the P&A it shows the two piece rotors (Group 5.809, P/N 3901098) were used on 67-69 Camaros, Novas and Chevelles. I don't believe the one piece started until the 70 models came out.

Ive always thought the 69s had two piece, and the 70 model got the one piece.
The reason I asked when it was changed (if it was sometime during the 69 model), is that I'm finishing up an 07A Z, and it had one piece rotors on it. They appear to be GM rotors, but with 79K miles on the car, they possibly could have been replaced. If they were, it wouldve been in the late 70s. The car had been in storage since the early 80s, and most of the car was all original. I was just wondering if they did switch to the one piece later in the production run.

I have a Norwood X33 Z28 built 05A. It had 45K original miles before the restoration back in 1995. It had the original 2-piece front rotors on it. Unfortunately, they were too thin and shops will not touch them.

hey dave, my 69 z is also a norwood 05A car. it still has the 2 piece rotors. drop me a line and lets compare notes.

Does anyone know the casting part numbers and casting dates on rotors, calipers, and rear brake drums on 69's? Here are the casting no's from mine:
Rotors: 2-piece: have "880", a wagon wheel, and "16" or "18 U I" and "18 U II" cast in the inner hub area.
Calipers: Delco Moraine, LH side P/N 5473510 casting, with 254 date code; RH side P/N 5470677 casting, with 274 date code (Julian date codes I assume). The 510 casting also has a date clock of 1st shift, 2:00 PM (it has 12 dots in the clock circle), with a "7" cast in (assume this could be the casting mold number). The 677 casting date clock is 1st shift, 8:00 PM, with an "8" or "9" cast in. They both have hte wagon wheel cast in next to the date clock.
Rear Drums: Both castings are P/N 8841177 with “W-12X” and W-14X”.
