Title: 69 Z-28 Hood & Deck Striping Specs
Post by: TX-302 on August 13, 2011, 10:17:06 AM
Hey guys, this may or may not have been covered before but is there any information on the CRG site or from previous threads that define the correct front and rear stripe locations and dimensions for repainting purposes? I'm sure Marty will know.... :-)

Any Vendor recommendations for stripe templates?

Many thanks!

A complimentary comment only.... for hard to find CRG items you're usually one of the (experienced) go to guys for CRG thread history. No offense intended.

Did you try any searches before starting the post (finds like Mark supplied you)? Helps to search out and see what you can find and then go from there.

Yes, I did take look through some of the old CRG threads but didn't come across anything unless I overlooked them. The links Mark provided were very helpful and much appreciated. I wasn't aware of the TC site....but will using it in addition to the CRG site. Was wondering about the comment on the slight size differences between the two main stripes on the rear deck...had never heard that one before.....just wondering if anyone has ever checked these measurements against their cars?

I'm not picking on you but at 57 units per hour no one measured anything in production. A friend worked in a dealership bodyshop back in the day and he laughs at stuff like this. Crooked, off-center, overspray etc. One of the more obvious errors made on the line was to use the vinyl roof position for the rear stripes on a car without a vinyl roof. A few survivors have this error.

Common striping errors in restoration are '67-'68 rear stripe layout on '69s; extending the stripes onto the trunk lid edge on a car built with spoilers; using the wrong color for a particular trim combo.

The spoiler was installed when the stripes were applied. Here is an excellent photo of how the factory did it.

Yes, the difference in width on the rear stripes has been verified on original paint cars.

I am not one for sales pitches unless its warrented. You owe it to yourself to pick up one of Jerry's books (or perhaps both) "The Definitive 1969 Camaro Z/28-SS396 Fact Book" (4th edition). A description of the stripes is but one many important topics covered in the book. If you are interested you can find it here...

BTW...luv Bill's answer!

The runs and light spots in original paint cars is hilarious no one paying 50k++ for a resto would stand for the lack of quality however it is how THEY were BUILT!
