Title: Convertible Rear Speaker
Post by: sixt9x33rs on July 22, 2011, 09:28:32 PM
The convertible I bought originally had a rear speaker. The previous owner threw away the speaker and hardware when he replaced the top. Does anyone have a picture of how this speaker installs? And any idea who reproduces them along with the hardware?

Thanks,

Lawrence

Lawrence, the 69 AIM (UPC U80, sheet A1) shows the part numbers and installation. However, I highly doubt you'll find a new original speaker (P/N 7300614), but THIS GUY (http://www.oldbuickparts.com/nos/69parts.shtml) supposedly has one. They're available used on ebay from time to time, so check there. As a matter of fact, HERE'S (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/10-ohm-1-wire-speaker-Buick-Olds-Pontiac-Chevy-GM-WORKS-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem3cba2e7402QQitemZ260821644290QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories) one now.

The rest is available reproduction from places like RICK'S (http://www.rickscamaros.com/). (Do a search on speaker)

Here's what the housing looks like:

Mark - can you actually hear anything when the top is down?

Not really, sounds good with the top up on the one day every 2 or 3 years that I drive the car with the top up.  You can tell there are speakers back there with the top down , but thats about it.  Lets face it the old systems were not exactly hi fidelity sound systems.  Combine the marginal . sound systems of the day and a set of chambered exhaust pipes and your lucky if you can tell the radio is on out on the highway with the top down.

I'll chech the p/n later today - I had a speaker guy in Ohio who had a rebuilt pair that I was looking at, however I just needed one for the 67 setup and he didn't want to split the pair.  He was offering me the pair at $170, but I'm not certain 67 and 69 used the same one.

67's never had rear speakers unless you had an 8 track, there was no multiplex radio option in 67 Camaro's from the factory.

Would my car had two speakers, or just one? It looks like it just had one...but I am just guessing somewhat.

If your car came with U63 (AM mono radio) or U69 (AM/FM mono radio), it would have come with a single front speaker in the dash. However, you could also order U80 (single rear speaker) if you wanted.

If your car came with U57 (8 Track stereo tape player) or U79 (AM/FM Stereo radio), then it would have automatically come with two front and two rear speakers.

Yep, plus to verify on a 67 you would have the group 2 code R on the trim tag for the rear speaker option U80.

I have the U69 option and all I see in the back is one blue wire on the passenger side of the car. The guy I got the car from said there was only one speaker in the back. When he put a new top on the car he pitched the speaker and the rear part of the top. So I will assume I only had one.

You also had the U80 Auxiliary single rear speaker option, the blue wire is the speaker wire, the speaker itself grounded to the rear seat support.  There was an add-on fader (really just a center tapped poentiometer) that sat on the right radio knob shaft that split the single mono radio output signal between the front speaker and the rear speaker.  Good luck finding the fader if its, not in the car now.

The right knob is on the radio with knob for tuning and also another knob/lever that looks like it would be for a fader/ bass/treble etc. Is there another knob? Do you have a picture?
