Title: 1967 Bryar Trans-Am photos
Post by: Jon Mello on June 30, 2011, 05:37:30 PM
Just yesterday I received a large quantity of racing photographs taken by Ron Lathrop at the 1967 Bryar Trans-Am. Ron was a freelance racing photographer dating back to 1963 and did work for Sports Car Graphic, Competition Press, Road & Track, as well as a number of karting magazines and even Rod & Custom. He also was in the U.S Air Force from 1965 - 69 and again from 1972 - 92. I'm going to post the Camaro photos first but would like to post all of them just because they are really cool and I think we all would enjoy them. Thank you very much Ron for sharing these with us!

Here, the Johnny Moore Camaro cuts through a turn ahead of Mark Donohue's Camaro while Ed Leslie's Cougar and Ken Duclos' Mustang are seen on another part of the track.

Greetings,

Thank you - these are wonderful.  I didn't appreciate just how tall the 'unofficial' rear ducktail spoiler was even for the rear view photographs.  Had I tried to fab. something, I likely would have stopped mid-stride believing '...oh, I couldn't look like THAT!'.  What a fun and funny thing to see put past tech., hence have to make one.

Yes Mike, I think replicating that spoiler is a must and now you have some good photos to work from.

Continuing on, here are some more photos. Notice how close the crowd is to the action on the track with nothing but a mound of dirt and a chain link fence to "protect" them. Those were the days!

About a third of the way through the race, Jerry Titus was trying to make a pass on Ken Duclos' white Mustang when they came together.
Titus' car spun many times before careening into the dirt bank, doing serious damage. He somehow got it over to the infield out of further
harm's way, but his day was done.

I already posted this picture in the "pace cars" thread because it shows the 1967 Camaro convertible pace car heading towards pit entrance but I also think it belongs here.  The fabulous color picture shows the field just before they got the green flag during the 1967 Bryar Trans Am race.  The front row consists of Jerry Titus who started on pole in his #17 light yellow Mustang and Peter Revson who started second in his #15 red Cougar.  Behind them in the second row you can see Milt Minter in his #78 darker yellow Mustang and Ed Leslie in his red #98 Cougar.  I'm not sure who took the photo but it was posted by Derek Sutton at the Historic SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Series Fan Group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=694312197249795&set=o.109038482465812&type=3&theater

Check out the last pic in reply #8!!! You can see the right front tire of Donahue is almost off the ground and that is on a wet track!

I've read through most of the reports on this race here, and wonder why did Gord Dewar take over from, or replace Craig Fisher in the "Golden Mile" Camaro ? he didn't finish after losing the left front wheel. was it because of the length of the race ? I see a couple of the other teams had two drivers as well.

Craig Fisher was in the entry list as driver for the #77 Camaro and even in some of the reported results but he in fact had already left to join the Penske team just prior to the Bryar race and Gordon Dewar drove the car instead. If you look at pics of Fisher's #77 at Mid-Ohio, it said "Quiet Man" (appropriate if you know Fisher) above the number roundel on the driver's door. At Bryar, the words "Quiet Man" are covered over with a piece of duct tape (appropriate if you know Dewar). Craig Fisher told me personally he didn't drive at Bryar.

Here's a link to some Bill Sutton photos from the Bryar Trans-Am as posted over on Steve Holmes' great website, The Roaring Season.

Craig Fisher in Mont- Tremblant driving the number 77 Camaro 1967. Craig also drove the 777 car in 1967.
