Title: Vent Hose on Breather
Post by: tmodel66 on June 29, 2011, 02:30:09 AM
Doe's the '69 L48 get the regular hose with a 90 degree angle in it from the breather to the right side valve cover?  When was the  metal tube introduced in place of the hose?

My 1969 L48 has the rubber hose from breather to valve cover.  I am not positive, but I believe the metal tube replaced the rubber hose in 1971 or 1972??

Is your breather to valve cover hose GM stamped, or plain black?

Although not a L48, at least another possible '69 data point.

The attached picture shows the PCV hose /tube connection from my '69 LF7 (327 / 210 hp) engine.  Although this engine is not original to my car, it is a '69 327 Camaro engine that I personally pulled from VIN #124379N551248; engine code V1122FJ; (Flint engine, 22 Nov 1968 engine assembly date, 3 sp manual tranny) back in March 1994 when that car was being parted out.

The metal breather tube and rubber hose connecting the metal tube to the air clearner were on the engine when I pulled it.  The rubber hose has yellow GM markings on it which if you look very closely at the attached pic you can barely make them out.

Don't know if these pieces were original to the engine at the time of assembly in 1968 or not, but they were there when I pulled it in 1994.  They are on my car today.

Rich,

I spoke to a guy at Firewheel Classics and we came up with the same hose configuration as yours. The first pic shows a sweep and a matting valve cover grommet. The second pic shows the hose...notice two different diameters at each end. The metal sweep is sized to mate w/the grommet & rubber hose. The oposite end of the rubber hose is sized to mate w/the air breather.

Hopefully we will get more feed back to narrow this thing down. I am still a little Leary because the guy I spoke to doesn't know if this is the correct application for the L48.

We are almost certain the one pictured on my car is for a BB.

Thanks

Rich Thanks for the pic. That's what I thought was correct but everybody tells me the metal pipe didn't come in to play til '70  '71 or '72.  Anyhow that's what I had to use on my car but I ordered the hose and coupling from Firewheel today just in case. I've tried several times to get good pics of L48 engine bay but me and Marty are the only one's that have one I guess cause nobody wants to share.

69 L48 used the full rubber hose no metal pipe.

You can take this one to the bank! This is Steve's Vintage Certified 69 L48.

Pay no attention to the alarm mounted on the left fender ;). IIRC, the original owner mounted it himself. Everything else is dead on.

Thanks Steve!

Thanks for all the response. I got everything ordered today so now I can put it together when it gets here.

My '69 L-48 came with the metal tube as shown in Marty's reply #4 with the red arrows.  Definitely original.  Back in 1978 I owned a 70 SS-350 (L48) and it had the exact same setup. Maybe a Norwood thing since both of my cars came from there?

Steve,

I thought I had the build date of your L48. All I could find is that it was ordered early in 69 (March or April). Can you please let us know what it is. I am wondering if there is something to what Dennis stated. Perhaps an Assembly plant choice/preference.

Here are some pictures of the breather hose on my L48.  The first one is the Original hose which was on the car when I purchased it from the original owner in 1975. The second picture is of the only writing on the original hose (it appears to be an 'S'). The third and fourth pictures are of a NOS GM hose I bought.  After a little more parts manual research, it seems as though Chevrolet Camaros changed to the metal tube on 350 engines in 1970.  Please excuse the free flashlight in the first picture, but I needed something to prop up the hose  :).

Here's the second two pictures that were too large to post with the first ones.

Thanks for posting the pics! Look at the close up shot of Steve's valve to breather line...The mark is identical to your original. Do you know if either of the two you posted above are still available?

Can you buy a hose of any kind that will work? I ordered what I thought was correct but it's for the open element and that's all I can find.

I'm just thinking of all the judges I've p%$%# off. I want to be sure I've covered all the angles. Those guys will probably show up with cutting torches and pneumatic shears to inspect my car... ;)

Judges... :-*

Marty,
The NOS GM hose in the second set of pictures (3942524)  is what GM sold as replacement for the original hose in the 1975 P&A book.  I am not sure if the part number was the same in earlier parts catalogs because 1975 is the earliest one I still have. As far as I know the 3942524 has been discontinued.  Do an internet and eBay search and they pop up every now and then :).

I did a search for this part number and I can't find a hose. I checked the majority of the restoration parts houses and nobody list one for closed element. Does anybody know where I can find a hose?

I have one off of my Pro-touring camaro 327. It has hardened on the ends with a crack at one end but you should be able to do some reconditioning.

Daniel,

I wouldn't loose too much sleep over this hose. I think the one Charley is offering is as good a replacement as any. I plan to keep mine until a 3942524 comes along. Who knows, maybe someone will stumble on this thread and offer it (guys, PM me before Daniel... ;D). And...how many 1000pt cars are out there with a born with hose? Can't be many...

PM sent Thanks Charley !!!!

@ Marty That's what I was thinking. The crack will add a little patina.   ;D

You could repair the crack with something like black silicone. You might see it if looking for it but you should be able to hide it pretty well.
