I have not been able to find any thing in-the CRG site on the different carrier series.
Is there a link that explains the differences and how one can identify which is which.

Thanks!

Vic, the 3894859 is the casting number of the center section (some call it the "pumpkin") on the 10 bolt rear end. You can read more HERE (http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml#axle).

Sorry Ed. This shows my ignorance.
Where do I look for the carrier casting number?

Do I have to remove the differential back cover to determine which series is in the rear axle?

The 2.73 axle used a 2 series carrier, so if the car still has this gear set, no, you don't have to remove the cover.
