Title: DZ 302 re-manufactured motor on ebay
Post by: 69camarozz4 on June 22, 2011, 06:53:20 PM
I am new to this forum, but have been a camaro buff since I was a little boy.  My dad gave me his 69 camaro z-29 when I was 16 years old.  Since then, I have restored it almost completely to original conditions besides some minor things and most importantly the DZ 302 motor.  Currently, I have the ZZ4 350 crate motor from Chevrolet, and I was thinking about dropping the ZZ502 motor in the car, but I really want to put an original DZ 302 motor back in the car because let's face it, it is the quickest and most wicked small block chevy motor ever made....  I have found this motor on ebay, and it looks like the closest motor that I could get besides the original.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1969-Camaro-Z-28-DZ-302-ALL-NEW-/290579704980?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43a7e66c94

Could anybody give me some beneficial information on whether or not this is real, which I have done everything I can, and it looks to be a legitimate re-built 69 camaro dz 302 motor with all original parts, but I would rather rely on more knoweledgeable wisdom than mine.

I talked to the guy who built the motor, and he said that some of these motors did not come with the vin stamp, most did, but some did not.  That was a major question for me since I did not see one in any of the pictures.

Even though this is not the original motor, I believe that the value added to the car will more than make up for the cost.  I will probably never get rid of my car because it was my fathers, but spending $6,000 on a motor to replace a perfectly good motor with 20,000 miles on it is no small decision.

I appreciate whatever information you may have.  I will post my vehicle's number as soon as I can get them written down just for thoghts.  Thanks again.

I am certainly no expert in DZ motors but I've learned to recognize tall tail clues when someone is trying to sell altered engines. My advise would be to walk away. This engine has been decked. In other words the engine pad and its numbers/letters were removed and replaced with new ones. This would only hurt the value of your car and you would never recoup your loss.

BTW...welcome

The black oil fill in the front of the intake is not 1969. Since the guy knows his #s well he should know that. I agree with what Marty says but if all you want is a 302 you might not be able to find the parts and build it for that kind of money.

I just don't know why someone would go throug this much work to get all of the parts correct if they were not going to be honest in their description.  All of the parts for the heads, the brank, manifolds, etc match.  The only thing that seems funny to me is the missing vin.  It appears to be a real dz from the v 12 15 dz markings on the block, but why no vin?

>ALL NEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is all new, including the recently added pad stamp. That is not a real/original DZ stamp.

So it looks like this motor is not quite the motor I am looking for.  It seemed like most of these parts were matching up by the numbers with a google search.  All I was getting hits for were 69 z28 camaros.  I am glad that I asked or I would have been real upset.   Is the block even a real 69 dz 302 block?

Is the block even a real 69 dz 302 block?

There's no such thing as a "DZ 302 block", although many sellers want you to believe there IS such a rare thing; it was just another 4"-bore 350 4-bolt block until the internals were installed and the pad was stamped. The block casting and machining wasn't unique to the 302 at all.

If you are looking for a real 302 motor to put in your car than this looks pretty decent and seems reasonable. Who cares about the stamp if the motor is not the born with motor to your car. DZ is just a suffix code and does not really mean anything special about the block itself. Looks to be a real 302 to me. I would rather see this motor in your car than a crate motor.

I think you could get a real DZ for that amount.  When people are out to deceive I don't trust anything they've done.

Whats a real DZ? One that has been removed from a 1969 Z/28? it will still NOT be the correct motor for that car. Again DZ is nothing more than a suffix code. The guy should not have stamped anything on the pad. he should just try to sell the motor as a 302.

I guess then I start the hunt down for my original motor then...  I don't know how successful the desired outcome will be, but I guess I will just try and see where it lands me.  Here is the information on my car.

Dash Vin. No. -  124379L512041
Firewall Plate Numbers        S7  69  12437   LOS172666

                                           TR 711          7171      BDY

Do you need us to decode the information on your car, or are you simply posting this information to locate the motor?

S7 69 = Model Year
12437 = Coupe
LOS - Van Nuys (Los Angeles) California (until mid-December 1968)
172666 = Fisher Body Number
TR 711 = Interior Trim Code (Standard Black)
7171- Top and Bottom Body Code (Lemans Blue)
This is what I have thus far on the decoding part....
But I am going to try and track down the original motor by trying to find the person my dad purchased the car from and see if I cannot discover who took out the original motor.  Do you think that is the best place to start or should I try something else?  Do you think that finding the original motor is virtually hopeless?  I think that it would be pretty sweet if I could run it down or at least get pretty damn close...  How do I find out if it was originally a z-28 to make sure that nobody converted it?  I don't see anything in the code that designates it as a true z-28 thus far...
