Title: '69 front parking lamp/turn signal restoration
Post by: grit1210 on June 21, 2011, 05:21:35 PM
Is it possible to remove the bulb socket assembly from the housing?  I'm assuming I could use a flaring tool to reinstall but can I get it out without boogering it up?

Thanks.

Yes it is. I carefully lifted the rolled edge made of brass up and pulled the socket and wirinf out. Once the housing was plated I scuffed the inside surface and painted white. Then I put the socket back in and tamped it down with a socket...3/4" as I remember.

Thanks Gary.  Did you fashion yourself a pry tool or were you able to use an existing tool?

Just a medium screw driver. The brass is pretty soft.

I have restored a few sets of these. You need to be VERY careful prying the copper-brass socket body lip flange open at the crimp where it mates with the stamped steel housing. I can be done and you need to work slow and firm. I used side cutting pliers and bent needle nose pliers. The results are stunning.

I need to resize a photo and post it.

Slow and careful, but they do turn out nice.

They look beautiful.  I had to shelve mine for some house projects but I'm ready to get back to them.  Thanks for the posts. :)
