Title: Jones cable drive Tachometer
Post by: cuda48 on June 07, 2011, 01:46:16 PM
Had a great time meeting Jon and talking with Chad at Infineon despite the rain out.  Sunday I was at a swap meet and spied a Jones-Motorola Tach, cable drive style with cable, in fairly nice condition amongst a bunch of non-race items so I asked the guy the proverbial "How much?" expecting something insane.  After a bit haggling I walked away with it for $55.  I'll post some photos when I'm not so busy...last week of school!

Mike, it was a real pleasure to meet you and your god son at the track over the weekend. I also had the pleasure of meeting Dale Mathers (kiwiboss) who flew in from New Zealand. In spite of the rain, I still had a great time. That's a nice score on the tach. Last week of school... lucky you!

It was great to meet you as well Jon!! just didn't have enough time with too many to talk to!! Was a shame about the rain but for me still a great event and great to see Chad get the win!! the attention to detail on Chads Camaro is impressive!! i must say!!

Thanks for the kind words, Dale.  I appreciate it.

This thread needs some pictures, so here's a set of original Jones Motrola 3.25" face tachometers.  The diameter of the outside edge of the bezel is ~3.7" for each of these.

And a larger 4.25" JONES Motrola cable-driven tachometer.

And I believe the 1970 Chaparral Camaro also used a 4.25" face JONES Motrola cable-driven tachometer, similar to item posted just above.

And a MOON labeled 4.25" face JONES Motrola cable-driven tachometer.  A better pic could come from BRUCE302.

Here are a couple of pics of the above tach, they benefit from not having been reduced for email reasons.
The numbers on the decal on the back are:  Model 5103-B-113  Ratio 1-2 Code EI Counter RAL

Is that piece original to your Firebird, Bruce or something that you picked up later?

It was something I picked with a view to using but since then I found a pic of my interior and courtesy of Chad Raynal, i now have the exact right version.

Great news that you were able to get an interior photo and get the appropriate tach. Definitely one of the benefits of networking with fellow like-minded enthusiasts.

Here's the pic Jon, I had to reduce it for here, but zoomed in you can see the tach.

Are these hard to come by? I haven't been too impressed with my Jones. The needle seems to bounce around more than I expected. Any one else have the same issue? Cable and tach drive are new btw...

A Jones tach, as far as quality goes, is a top of the line piece. Mechanical tachs can bounce around some but are more accurate than an electric tach, especially as the RPMs climb. It's hard to say what the exact issue might be with your tach but it would seem to be that something is not adequately lubricated. If the tach is 40+ years old and never been touched, maybe it ought to be looked at.
