Title: Street weight vs racing weight
Post by: Gramps69Z on May 05, 2011, 01:42:41 PM
Jon, do you know know the weight differences between the cars?        A factory street Z compared to a racing Z.

Thanks,

The weight of a street Z is going to vary depending on year and options. A guess for a '69 street Z would be around 3150-3200lbs.  In the SCCA rule book, the minimum weight for the 1968 racing year for all pony cars was set at 2800lbs, less fuel and driver. For the 1969 racing year, it was bumped up to a minimum weight of 2900lbs, less fuel and driver. For the years 1970-1972, the minimum legal weight was changed to 3200lbs with fuel or 3400lbs with fuel and driver. The 1967 racing year did not give a specific minimum weight but was supposed to be 350lbs less than the "homologated" weight. The homologated weight is what the factory told the SCCA what a typical Camaro (or Mustang, Cougar, etc...) weighed in stock form. Of course, they were not required to prove what that weight was so they all lied and came up with lighter than typical weights. A '67 car could have and probably would have raced under the 2800lb minimum established for the '68 season. The establishment of a standard minimum weight for all Trans-Am cars came as a result of what happened the previous year. Does that answer your question?

Yes you have answered my question.  I guess if you wasn't cheating you wasn't trying.

Thanks,
John

I guess you could say some people/teams scrutinized the rule book a little more carefully than others.  :D

Wouldn't be worth their salt as a racer if they didn't...
