Title: Rear disc brake conversion
Post by: rags31 on April 29, 2011, 09:24:09 PM
Hello,
I'm new to the forum. I recently acquired a '68 SS with front disc brakes and was considering upgrading the rear drums to disc. I was hoping to get feedback from any one thats made the upgrade and if it's an improvment to what degree, Also, what kit does the best job as I've seen 3-4 on the market. I'm also considering changing out the "14x6 rims to "15x7 - are there any problems going with the 15's front & rear? What tire sizes would you recommend 225 or 235? Is therd enough clearance in front for these?

Thanks for your feedback

I run 15X8s on my '68.  I have 295s in the back and 265s in the front.  The fronts rub a bit.  But I think with another 1/2" of back spacing, it wouldn't.  So, 225 or 235 should be fine.

As far as the brakes, I'm sure some people on here can help you out.  I can't.  But I'd like to suggest Team Camaro for help with most modifications.  There are a lot more people changing out parts on that site.  Just a suggestion if you don't get some quick answers here...

Are your front discs aftermarket?  If so, it's a good idea to use the same brand front & rear.  Most conversions require a min. 15" rim w/min. backspacing requirements specified by the manufacturer.  Some would argue its a better investment to increase the size of your front disc's vs install disc's on the rear.

front are stock power disc  - I'm going to 15X8 wheels - it appears most aftermarket rear disc kits require "15 wheels.

I believe you can use GM rear disc from a 79-81 Camaro/Firebird with little modification. Maybe someone can clarify.

Just noticed my thread on the subject at the bottom of the page, it appears to be a direct swap for a 69 according to some. Might be worth a read.

Lots of info here: http://www.pozziracing.com/brakes.htm#Converting_Drums_to_Discs
15x7 was standard z28 wheel, it fits. Tire size will depend to some degree on your backspacing, and any other mods, like dropped spindles, short springs, etc.

You are correct. I had them on one of my 69 Camaros and they worked great.
